Past continuous (was/were + verb-ing) በተወሰነ ያለፈ ሰዓት እየተካሄደ የነበረ ተግባርን ወይም በሌላ ተግባር የተቋረጠ ተግባርን ለመግለጽ ይጠቅማል። Past perfect continuous (had been + verb-ing) ደግሞ በኋላ ጊዜ ተጀምሮ እስከ ሌላ ያለፈ ጊዜ የቀጠለ ተግባርን ያሳያል፤ ብዙ ጊዜ for፣ since፣ before ወይም when ከሚሉ ቃላት ጋር ይመጣል።

እንደ arrive ያሉ አንዳንድ ግሶች ለቀጣይ ጊዜ አይመቹም። "At noon, he arrived" ብለው ይጻፉ እንጂ "At noon, he was arriving" አይበሉ።
