When you use it

Use it when you must choose between pairs such as he or him, we or us inside a sentence. The nominative case marks the subject, and the accusative case marks the object of a verb or the object of a preposition.

Watch out

In a pair such as "You and he", the pair is the subject, so use the nominative form and never "you and him". The case depends on the job the pronoun does in the sentence, not on where it stands.

Drafted from Grade 11 English, pages 225-252, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use the past continuous (was or were + verb-ing) for an action in progress at a precise past time, or one interrupted by another action. Use the past perfect continuous (had been + verb-ing) for an action that began in the past and continued up to another past time, often with for, since, before or when.

Watch out

Some verbs do not suit a continuous form, for example arrive. Write "At noon, he arrived", never "At noon, he was arriving".

  3. C.The 1970s and 1980s
  4. D.The 1990s and 2000s
Show the answer and why

Answer: B The 1950s and 1960s

Paragraph 3 of the reading says that PDRMs have been marginalized since the 1950s and 1960s. This was the time when the imperial regime was codifying and modernizing the laws.

Question 2

What does the idiomatic expression “kill two birds with one stone” mean?

  1. A.To solve two problems with one action
  2. B.To go hunting for birds early in the morning
  3. C.To fail two exams on the same day
  4. D.To break something by accident
Show the answer and why

Answer: A To solve two problems with one action

Why

An idiom has a meaning that is different from the meanings of its single words. “Kill two birds with one stone” means that one action solves two problems at the same time.

Question 3

Choose the best antonym (opposite) of the underlined word.

The waiter was rude to the guests.

  1. A.polite
  2. B.loud
  3. C.quiet
  4. D.rough
Show the answer and why

Why

An antonym is a word with the opposite meaning. The opposite of rude is polite. “Loud,” “quiet” and “rough” do not describe the opposite of bad manners.

  1. A.I’m sorry.
  2. B.Excuse me.
  3. C.Never mind.
  4. D.I apologize for this.

Answer: C Never mind.

Why

“Never mind” is in the list of phrases for accepting apologies in the Language Tip. The other three are phrases for making an apology.

Which statement is FALSE according to the listening text?

  1. A.Conflict is an inevitable part of human life.
  2. B.Different societies have different ways of resolving conflicts.
  3. C.The conflicting parties could be individuals, groups or societies.
  4. D.Conflict occurs in some kind of human relations only.
Show the answer and why

Answer: D Conflict occurs in some kind of human relations only.

Why

The listening text marks the statement “Conflict occurs in some kind of human relations only” as False. The other three statements are true according to the text.

Question 6

In the reading text, which indigenous practice is linked with the Amhara?

  1. A.Gadaa
  2. B.Shimgillina
  3. C.Fetha Negast
  4. D.Restorative justice
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Shimgillina

Why

Paragraph 2 says: “the institutions of Gadaa among the Oromo, the Shimgillina of the Amhara and other ethnic groups are practiced.” Gadaa belongs to the Oromo, not the Amhara.

Question 7

In paragraph 5 of the reading text, the word “They” in “They have demonstrated their commitment” refers to:

  1. A.the international and regional forums
  2. B.government officials and researchers
  3. C.the majority of the people
  4. D.the indigenous elders
Show the answer and why

The sentence before says, “both government officials and researchers have accepted the international and regional tendency…”. So “They” points back to government officials and researchers.

Question 8

Choose the correct form of the verb in brackets to complete the sentence.

The kids ___ in the garden when it suddenly began to rain. (play)

  1. A.played
  2. B.were playing
  3. C.had played
  4. D.play
Show the answer and why

Answer: B were playing

Why

The past continuous is made with was/were + the -ing form. It describes an action that was going on when another action (the rain starting) interrupted it. So the answer is were playing.

Question 9

Choose the best verb form to complete the sentence.

Martha ___ three miles a day for years before she broke her leg.

  1. A.walked
  2. B.was walking
  3. C.had walked
  4. D.had been walking
Show the answer and why

Answer: D had been walking

Why

The past perfect continuous (had been + -ing) shows an action that started in the past, continued up to another point in the past, and was still going on at that point. The breaking of the leg is that point. The word for is often used with this tense, as in the examples in the unit.

Question 10

According to the writing section of this unit, what is a thesis statement in an expository text?

  1. A.A sentence at the end that repeats the first paragraph word for word.
  2. B.A sentence that states the topic of the paper and lists the key aspects that will be discussed.
  3. C.A list of the cohesive devices used in the essay.
  4. D.The first word of each body paragraph.
Show the answer and why

Answer: B A sentence that states the topic of the paper and lists the key aspects that will be discussed.

Why

The unit says that in an expository text, “the thesis statement states the topic of your paper and lists the key aspects of your topic that will be discussed in the paper.” Cohesive devices are different: they connect ideas, but they are not the thesis.
