What the work looks like
Families come to Temari.et when a child is struggling in a subject or getting ready for a national exam. When a family picks you, you agree the days and times together, and you teach at their home or online.
Students are in school during the day, so lessons happen after classes, in the evening or at the weekend. That makes tutoring easy to fit next to a full-time job or university classes.
You decide how much you take on: the subjects and grades you teach, the areas you are willing to travel to, and whether you teach in person, online or both. You can start with one family and add more when you have the time.
What families are asking for
Families have been leaving requests on the Temari.et waiting list. Most of them want help with high school subjects.
By grade, most asked first
- Grade 12 and the national exam
- Grades 9 to 11
- KG to Grade 8
By subject, most asked first
- 1Mathematics
- 2Physics
- 3Chemistry
- 4History
- 5Biology
- 6Economics
- 7Geography
- 8English
Many families ask for help with every subject in the natural or social science stream.
Requests come from across Addis Ababa, including Bole, Ayat, Yeka, Kolfe, Saris and Jemo, and from towns outside it such as Sululta, Dukem, Hawassa and Woldia.

How you are paid
When you apply, you set a monthly package: how many lessons a week, how long each one is, and what the month costs. Your hourly rate is worked out from it, and any other plan a family asks for is priced at that rate. If you teach brothers and sisters together, you can add a rate for each extra child.
Families pay Temari.et for each month before it starts, and lessons open only once that month is paid. Every lesson you give has already been paid for.
After each lesson you mark it as given, and the family confirms it. If they have not answered within three days, it counts as confirmed. Every Monday the pay for the lessons confirmed at least three days earlier goes into your Temari.et wallet, and a lesson the family raised a problem with waits until it has been sorted out. Temari.et's fee comes off first, and it is 15% at the moment. The money is then sent to your bank account or Telebirr, once you have confirmed the account it is going to.
An example month
- 12 hours at 250 birr an hour
- 3,000 birr
- Temari.et fee (15%)
- 450 birr
- Paid to your wallet
- 2,550 birr
This is only an example: your own rate and hours decide the real figure.
Who can apply
Teachers, university students and graduates can all apply. You need to know your subject well and be able to explain it to a young learner. To apply, you will need:
Your Fayda ID
The number, and the card itself, which you photograph with your camera while you apply.
Your certificates
Your degree or diploma if you have one, and letters from schools you have taught at. Teachers whose school uses Temari.et can attach files straight from their employee file.
Your subjects and grades
Pick them from the national curriculum, KG to Grade 12, and say where you teach or whether you teach online.
Your monthly package
How many lessons a week, how long each one is, and the price for the month. You can change it later.
A few lines about you
A headline, a short note on how you teach, and a video of up to two minutes saying hello. It is the first thing a family sees on your profile.
How to apply
Create your account
Tap Apply to tutor and sign up with your phone number. It takes about a minute.
Fill in the application
It goes one step at a time: your Fayda card and a photo of your face, both taken with your camera, then your subjects, education, where you live, your profile, a short video and your monthly package. Each step is saved as you go, so you can stop and come back.
A review, then a subject exam
The Temari.et team reads your application. You may then be asked to sit an online exam in the subjects you teach, with your camera on. If you do not pass the first time, you can sit it once more after 15 days.
An interview
You choose a time for a short interview, by video call or at the Temari.et office, and teach a ten-minute sample lesson.
Approved
Once you are approved, families will be able to find your profile, with a mark for each check you passed.
Questions tutors ask
- Can I tutor part time?
- Yes. You choose which families to take on and agree the lesson times with each one, so tutoring can fit around a job or your university classes.
- Can university students apply?
- Yes. University students, graduates and working teachers can all apply. An application is judged on how well you know your subjects and on the documents you can show.
- Are there online tutoring jobs?
- When you apply you choose online, in person or both. Online lessons run on a video link Temari.et creates for each lesson, so you can teach students in other cities from home.
- How much can I earn?
- You set your own monthly package, and your hourly rate is worked out from it. The family pays that rate for the lessons you teach. Temari.et's fee comes off first, and the price step of the application shows exactly what you keep.
- When do I get paid?
- Families pay for each month before it starts. Every Monday the pay for the lessons confirmed at least three days earlier goes into your Temari.et wallet. A lesson a family questioned waits until it has been sorted out. From the wallet the money is sent to your bank account or Telebirr after you confirm the account.
- Do I have to live in Addis Ababa?
- No. You say where you teach when you apply, and that can be any city. Online lessons work from anywhere with a steady internet connection.
- Does it cost anything to apply?
- Applying costs nothing. Temari.et's fee comes out of your pay: at the moment it is 15% of what each month's confirmed lessons earn.
- What happens after I apply?
- The Temari.et team reviews your application. Then come a subject exam, if the team asks for one, and a short interview with a sample lesson. We tell you at each step, by text or in the app. Once you are approved, families will be able to find you in the tutor directory and send you offers.
- What rules do tutors agree to?
- Before you send your application, you read the tutor code of conduct and agree to follow it. It asks you to keep lessons and payments on Temari.et, to arrive on time, to treat every learner with respect and to teach home lessons where another adult can see you.Read the code of conduct
