Question 1

If the tail of vector B is placed at the tip of A and the tail of C is placed at the tip of B, the sum of the three vectors is drawn from the

  1. A.Tail of A to tip of B
  2. B.Tail of A to tip of C
  3. C.Tail of B to tip of C
  4. D.Tip of C to tail of B
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B Tail of A to tip of C

Why

According to the polygon (head-to-tail) method of vector addition, if vectors are arranged tip-to-tail, the resultant vector (the sum) is drawn from the tail of the first vector (A) to the tip of the last vector (C).

Question 2

A, B, and C are three points on a straight line road with AB=40km and BC=90km. A woman travel from A to B at 10km/h and then B to C at 15km/h. What is the average speed of the woman for the journey from A to C?

  1. A.25km/h
  2. B.5km/h
  3. C.13km/h
  4. D.6km/h
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C 13km/h

Why

The total distance traveled is 40 km+90 km=130 km40\text{ km} + 90\text{ km} = 130\text{ km}. The total time taken is the sum of the times for each leg: t1=40/10=4 hourst_1 = 40/10 = 4\text{ hours} and t2=90/15=6 hourst_2 = 90/15 = 6\text{ hours}, giving a total of 10 hours10\text{ hours}. Thus, the average speed is 130 km/10 hours=13 km/h130\text{ km} / 10\text{ hours} = 13\text{ km/h}.

Question 3

A man standing on a friction less surface continuously fired 120 bullets horizontally in 1 minutes using machine gun. If each bullet has a mass 10g and leaves the muzzle of the gun with a speed of 800m/s. what is the average force exerted by the gun on the man?

  1. A.8N
  2. B.16N
  3. C.960N
  4. D.16,000N
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B 16N

Why

The mass of each bullet is 0.01 kg0.01\text{ kg}, so the momentum of each bullet is p=mv=0.01 kg×800 m/s=8 kg⋅m/sp = mv = 0.01\text{ kg} \times 800\text{ m/s} = 8\text{ kg}\cdot\text{m/s}. In 1 minute (60 s60\text{ s}), 120 bullets are fired, so the total momentum change is ΔP=120×8=960 kg⋅m/s\Delta P = 120 \times 8 = 960\text{ kg}\cdot\text{m/s}, and the average force is F=ΔP/Δt=960/60=16 NF = \Delta P / \Delta t = 960 / 60 = 16\text{ N}.

Question 4

Two men A and B are loading identical boxes onto a truck. A lifts his box straight up from the ground to the bed of the truck, whereas B slides his box up rough ramp to the truck. Which statement is correct about the change in the potential energy on the box Earth system?

  1. A.A and B change the Potential energy by the same amount
  2. B.A changes more Potential energy than B
  3. C.B changes more Potential energy A
  4. D.None of those statement is necessarily true
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A A and B change the Potential energy by the same amount

Why

Gravitational potential energy depends only on the vertical displacement of the object (U=mghU = mgh). Since both identical boxes are lifted to the exact same height on the truck, the change in potential energy is the same for both.

Question 5

What do we mean when we say a certain machine is 98 percent efficient?

  1. A.The machine wastes 2 joules of an input energy
  2. B.The machine wastes 2 percent of an input energy
  3. C.The machine multiplying an input force by a factor of 98
  4. D.The machine multiplying energy by a factor of 98
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B The machine wastes 2 percent of an input energy

Why

Efficiency is the ratio of useful work output to total energy input. An efficiency of 98% means that 98% of the input energy is converted into useful work, while the remaining 2% is wasted as thermal energy or friction.

Question 6

Two solid spheres made of gold and silver having equal masses are suspending by a springs and fully submerged in a tank of water. The density of gold is greater than that of silver, which one of the following statements is true?

  1. A.The buoyant force on each sphere is the same
  2. B.The volume of water displaced by the gold sphere is larger than that of the silver sphere
  3. C.The tension in the string supporting each sphere is the same
  4. D.The buoyant force on the silver sphere is greater that on the gold sphere
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D The buoyant force on the silver sphere is greater that on the gold sphere

Why

Since both spheres have equal mass and gold is denser than silver (Pgold>PsilverP_{\text{gold}} > P_{\text{silver}}), the gold sphere has a smaller volume (Vgold<VsilverV_{\text{gold}} < V_{\text{silver}}). Thus, the silver sphere displaces a larger volume of water and experiences a greater buoyant force.
