What did the ILO training cover?
The International Labour Organization (ILO) said on Tikimt 13, 2019 E.C. (23 October 2026) that green skills are moving from the training room into classrooms, campuses and institutional practice. The training was held in Arba Minch as part of the ILO's Global Skills Programme in Ethiopia, which Norway funds through Norad.
Sessions covered changing occupations and skills needs, green jobs, worker protection, environmental sustainability, green enterprises and the role of technical and vocational training (TVT) in supporting a just transition.
The programme ended with action planning on how green TVT approaches can be built into curricula and training materials.
Which institutions and staff are involved?
The ILO named participants from Wolaita Sodo University, TVT institutions and labour and skills offices. The release does not give the number of participants, and it does not say whether other universities or colleges were invited.
I want to take this beyond the training room. At Wolaita Sodo University, I will work to integrate green skills into our teaching, research and community engagement, while raising awareness among students and staff so that greening becomes part of our institutional culture.
Other participants also described their plans. Frehiwot Tamru, Head of Department at Wolaita Sodo University, wants to teach sustainability through practical training and to improve waste and water use on campus. Haymanot Eshetie of the Environmental Science Department plans to set up an environmental club. A dean of a TVET college wants to cut waste, use solar energy and integrate green skills across training programmes. The ILO presents these as personal plans, not decisions by the institutions.

What should readers do now?
The release does not ask readers to act. Anyone who wants to follow the work can:
- Read the ILO release for the programme's own account of the training.
- Watch the notices of their own institution, since no change to courses or clubs has been announced.
How does this fit Ethiopia's green transition?
The ILO places the training within Ethiopia's move towards a greener economy. It says the transition can create new jobs while also changing existing occupations, technologies and tasks, which makes reskilling and upskilling essential.
A second account of the same training is on the site: ILO trains educators on green skills in Arba Minch.
