What the universities say
Bahir Dar University's president, Menegesha Ayene (Dr.), said the university spent the past months organising documents and preparing the other work autonomy needs. That is finished, he said, the request is with the Ministry, and the next step is the Ministry's answer.
At Hawassa University, the vice president for academic affairs, Fisseha Getachew (Dr.), said the documents are ready too. He said the university will start the day the Ministry formally accepts its request and tells it to begin.
Which nine
The report does not name the nine universities, and the government's list has not been published. The channel illustrated the post with the logos of Gondar, Bahir Dar, Jimma, Haramaya, Adama Science and Technology, Addis Ababa Science and Technology, Arba Minch, Hawassa and Mekelle universities. Read that as the channel's picture until the Ministry publishes its own list. Addis Ababa University is not among them because it is already autonomous.
The report does not say what changes for students during the two-year transition, or after it.
