Temari on the school's computers, with or without internet

The desktop app runs on Mac and Windows for teachers, students, families, tutors and the school office. It opens with no connection, keeps work on the computer, and runs a lab exam over the network cable from a file on a USB stick.

Talk to us
The main computer in a lab with no internet: thirty seats on one screen, each with its progress, and the exam clock kept in one place.

Why a desktop app, when Temari runs in a browser

Most Ethiopian schools have computers long before they have reliable internet. The computer lab works, the office computer works and the teacher's laptop works, while the connection comes and goes. A browser tab that needs the network leaves those machines idle exactly when the school wants to use them.

The desktop app puts Temari on the computer itself. It opens with no connection, keeps the pages and files each person needs, holds their work until it can be sent, and uses the computer for what a phone cannot do, such as locking the screen for an exam or running a whole lab from one machine.

It is the same Temari as the website, with the same screens, the same accounts and the same records. A feature added to Temari reaches the desktop app with its next update, and work done on the computer passes the same checks as work done online.

capabilities

Opens with no internet

The app starts on a computer with no connection, and every page opened before reads offline with the time it was saved.

Work waits on the computer

Attendance, marks, lesson plans, exam drafts and office work are kept on the computer and sent in order when the internet returns.

Locked exams

A class exam can be set to open only in the desktop app, where it fills the screen and keeps other programs out of reach until the student hands it in.

Lab exams with no internet

The teacher carries the exam on a USB stick. One main computer runs it for the whole lab over the network cable, and the results go to Temari later.

A lab exam, start to finish

  1. 1

    Prepare it online

The teacher builds the exam in Temari and downloads the sealed exam file to a USB stick.

  2. 2

    Open the room

On the day, the main computer in the lab opens the file with the start code, and the room appears on its screen.

  3. 3

    Students sit the exam

Each student picks their name at a lab computer, the teacher admits them, and the clock runs from the main computer.

  4. 4

    Results reach Temari

When the exam ends the marks show in the room, and the results upload as soon as the main computer has internet.

Deep offline work for every role

A teacher opens the app on Monday morning with no connection and finds the week's classes, registers and marklists already on the computer. Attendance, marks, lesson plans, report card comments and question bank drafts are kept and sent in order when the internet returns.

A student saves a whole subject before going home: chapter notes, practice papers, flashcards and the textbook. They study and sit practice papers on the computer with no connection, and their progress reaches Temari the next time the computer is online.

The school office keeps working too. The registrar opens the student register, the finance officer looks up balances and records payments at the cash desk with a provisional slip, the storekeeper counts stock, and the director decides approvals. Each action waits on the computer and is checked by Temari when it arrives, exactly as if it had been done online.

Exams locked on the computer

A teacher can set a class exam to open only in the desktop app. When the student starts it, the exam fills the whole screen and other programs stay out of reach until the paper is handed in. A screen recording of the exam shows a blank window.

Leaving the exam is recorded for the teacher, the same way the online exam player records it. Like every flag in Temari, it is evidence for the teacher to weigh and never fails a student by itself.

A lock on a computer cannot stop a phone camera pointed at the screen. The lock keeps the computer itself inside the exam, and the teacher still watches the room.

A whole computer lab with no internet

The teacher downloads the exam file while online. It holds the paper and the class list, sealed, and opens only with a start code on the day of the exam. They carry it to the lab on a USB stick.

In the lab, one main computer opens the file and runs the exam for the room over the network cable. Students sit at the other computers and pick their name, and the teacher admits each one. Every answer is saved on the student's computer and on the main one, and the main computer keeps the clock, so it can pause the whole room or give one student more time.

Marks show in the room when the exam ends. The results go to Temari when the main computer is next online, or travel on the stick to a computer that is, and Temari marks the papers again so its marks are the official ones. A lab with no working network can still run the exam from the stick alone: each computer opens the file and writes its sealed answers back to the stick.

Also in the desktop app

  • Unlock with a PIN on a computer you have used before
  • Save a whole subject: notes, practice papers, flashcards and the textbook
  • Messages read offline, with replies sent when the internet returns
  • Downloaded PDFs kept on the computer and found again by search
  • Each account's saved work locked away from every other account on the computer
  • Updates that arrive by themselves, or from a USB stick for a computer that never goes online

Common questions

Which computers does the desktop app run on?

Mac, and Windows 10 or 11. An older computer in a lab can still sit a lab exam by opening, in its browser, the address the main computer shows, without the lock.

Is the desktop app a different Temari?

No. It shows the same screens as the website and uses the same account. A feature added to Temari reaches the app with its next update.

What happens to saved work when several people use one computer?

Each account has its own locked store on the computer, and one person's saved work cannot be read from another account. Saved data locks after 30 days without contact with Temari, and nothing is deleted without the person agreeing.

Does the locked exam stop all cheating?

It keeps the computer inside the exam: other programs and screen recording stay out of reach until the paper is handed in. It cannot stop a phone camera or a person in the room, so the teacher still supervises.

Do we need internet in the computer lab?

No. The main computer runs the exam over the lab's own network cable. Internet is needed only to download the exam file beforehand and to upload the results afterwards, and the results can travel on a USB stick instead.

Who marks the lab exam?

The main computer shows marks in the room as soon as the exam ends. When the results reach Temari, Temari marks every paper again, and its marks are the ones that count.

How do updates reach a computer with no internet?

Updates arrive by themselves whenever the computer is online. A computer that never connects can take an update from a USB stick.
