Any device, any connection
Keep working when the network drops
In Temari a lost connection is a pause in the job. The page stays on screen, the work waits on the phone, and it sends itself the moment the line comes back.
Built for the connection Ethiopian schools actually have
In many Ethiopian schools the network is good at seven in the morning, gone by ten and back after lunch. Power cuts take the office router with them. A school system that needs a steady connection turns every outage into lost work: a register that would not save, marks typed twice, a teacher who gives up and goes back to the exercise book.
Temari is built so that an outage costs time and never the work. The two jobs a school cannot afford to lose, the attendance register and the marklist, save on the device first and send when they can. A save sent twice lands once, because the server recognises the repeat.
Everything else is honest about the connection. Pages opened before show their last saved copy with its time. Actions that need the server say so out loud and keep a count of what did not send, so the person can try again when the line is back.
capabilities
Attendance and marks wait on the phone
A register or a marklist saved with no connection is kept on the device and sent when the network returns, the same morning or that night.
The page stays on screen
When the connection drops, a bar at the bottom says so and the page stays where it was. A teacher halfway through a marklist keeps their place.
Last saved copies, with their time
The dashboard, a teacher's day and a family's view of their children open from the last copy kept on the phone, labelled with when it was saved.
Every failure is counted
Anything that could not be sent is counted on the bar and listed when you open it, so nobody believes a save went through when it did not.
What happens when the connection drops
- 1
The line goes down
A save fails on the network. The page stays where it is, and a bar at the bottom says the connection is gone.
- 2
The work waits on the phone
Attendance and marks are kept on the device. Other actions say they need the connection and are counted on the bar.
- 3
Reading carries on
Pages opened before show their last saved copy, with the time it was saved.
- 4
The line comes back
The waiting work sends itself in order. Anything the server refuses comes back with its reason.
What waits on the phone, and what needs the connection
Attendance and marks are kept on the device when the connection drops. They wait through a closed browser, a restarted phone and a day without signal, and send in order when the network returns. If the term was closed or the sheet was signed in the meantime, Temari refuses the save and tells the teacher why.
Some work cannot safely wait: paying a fee, sitting a class exam, asking Temari AI, sending an SMS. Those need the connection, and when it is missing the screen says so plainly instead of pretending the action went through.
Reading works differently again. The dashboard, a teacher's day and a family's children page open from the last copy saved on the phone, always with the time it was saved, so nobody mistakes yesterday's numbers for today's.
A bar that tells you what is happening
When something fails, a bar slides up from the bottom of the screen. It says whether the phone has no network at all or whether Temari's own server cannot be reached, so a parent is never blamed for their data bundle when the fault is ours.
Tap the bar and it opens into a list: what is waiting on the phone, what could not be sent, and a button to check the connection again. When the network returns, the waiting work sends itself and the bar goes away.
On a healthy connection the bar costs nothing. Temari does not check the server every few seconds. It notices a failure when one happens, and only then starts checking, more slowly each time, until the line is back.
Gate readers and shared phones
The gate reader follows the same rule. When its connection drops, every tap is stored on the device and sent when the line returns, filed under the time the student actually arrived.
Temari never marks a class absent because a gate went quiet. If a gate reader in use has not reported for fifteen minutes, the automatic absent run for that branch waits, and the device page says why. A teacher's own mark always wins over the machine.
Many families share one phone. Waiting work and saved copies belong to the account that made them, and they are cleared when a different person signs in on that phone, so one person's school data never reaches the next account.
Also in this module
- Opening Temari with no connection keeps you signed in and your waiting work safe
- The bar tells a phone with no network apart from Temari's own server being out of reach
- Gate readers keep every tap through an outage and send them later
- Automatic absences wait while a gate reader is silent
- Waiting work belongs to the account that wrote it and is cleared when someone else signs in
Common questions
Does attendance work with no internet?
Yes. The register saves on the teacher's phone and sends itself when the connection returns. Guardians get their absence SMS once the register reaches Temari.
What if a teacher closes the browser before the marks are sent?
The marks stay on the phone through a closed browser and a restart, and send the next time Temari is opened with a connection.
Can the same marks arrive twice?
No. When a save is sent again, the server recognises it and records it once.
Do we need to install anything?
No. Temari runs in the phone's browser and can be added to the home screen like an app. On the school's computers, the desktop app for Mac and Windows goes further, keeping whole subjects, exam drafts and office work on the computer.
What does not work offline?
Paying a fee, sitting a class exam, Temari AI and anything that sends an SMS. Those need the connection, and the screen says so when it is missing.
Is offline data safe on a shared phone?
Saved copies and waiting work belong to the account that made them, and they are cleared when another person signs in on the same phone.
What if the gate reader loses its connection?
It keeps every tap and sends them when the line returns. While it is silent, automatic absences for that branch wait, so no child is marked absent because of a network fault.
