Teacher appraisals the teacher actually reads and signs

Each term the director or principal scores every teacher on the school's criteria, starting from the Ministry's eight. The teacher is told, reads the appraisal, and signs it with a comment of their own.

An appraisal in progress: eight criteria tapped out of 5, each showing the points it adds, and the total waiting until every line is scored.

Why appraisals are usually paper nobody reads

In most Ethiopian schools the teacher appraisal is a paper form filled in once a term, filed in a cabinet and rarely seen again. The teacher often never reads it, the weights are added up by hand, and when a dispute comes up there is no clean record of what was scored or when.

Temari keeps the appraisal with the rest of the teacher's record. The director or principal scores each teacher on the school's criteria, Temari adds up the weighted total, and the teacher receives it, reads it and signs it. Every appraisal is kept, term by term.

It starts from the format schools already know. The Ministry's eight criteria are ready the first time the page opens, and the school changes them only if it wants to.

capabilities

The Ministry's eight criteria, ready to use

Every school starts with the Ministry's appraisal shape: eight weighted criteria, each scored out of 5, adding up to 100.

Criteria the school can change

Rename a criterion, change its weight or add one of your own. The form will not save until the weights add up to 100.

Signed by the teacher

A submitted appraisal reaches the teacher, who reads it and signs it, with room for a comment of their own.

The whole round at a glance

The page counts every teacher at the branch: signed, waiting for the teacher, still a draft, or not started yet.

One appraisal, start to finish

  1. 1

    Start the round

The page lists every teacher at the branch. Start an appraisal for each one, or work down the not-started list.

  2. 2

    Score each criterion

Tap a score from 1 to 5 for each criterion. The total appears once every line is scored.

  3. 3

    Submit it to the teacher

The teacher is told that their appraisal is ready to read.

  4. 4

    The teacher signs

The teacher reads it, adds a comment if they wish, and signs. The signed appraisal is kept as it is.

Scoring that shows what each tap is worth

Each criterion is a row of points to tap, from 1 to 5. Beside the row, Temari shows what that score adds to the total, such as 9 of 15 points, so the person scoring always sees how much one line weighs against the others.

The total stays neutral until every criterion is scored. A half-filled appraisal never shows a low number that looks like a verdict, and the register lists a draft as not scored yet instead of drawing a bar for it.

Each criterion carries a small sign for its area, such as planning, teaching, assessment or punctuality, so eight rows are easy to scan on a phone as well as on a computer.

The school's own criteria, kept fair

Every school starts with the Ministry's appraisal shape: lesson planning and preparation, teaching methods, assessment and feedback, classroom management, student results, co-curricular work, professional ethics, and punctuality. Teaching carries 20 points, planning and assessment 15 each, and the rest 10.

A school can rename any criterion, change its weight, reorder the list or add its own. The criteria sheet shows how many of the 100 points are still to give, and Balance evenly shares them out, so the weights always add up to 100 before anything is saved.

When an appraisal is started, the criteria are copied into it. If the school changes its form next year, every appraisal already signed still shows the criteria and weights it was scored on.

A record the teacher has seen

The teacher cannot see an appraisal while the director or principal is still writing it. Submitting it tells the teacher, who opens it, reads every score and signs that they have seen it, with a comment if they want to add one. Once signed, nothing in it changes.

The page counts the round against everyone who works at the branch, including the people whose appraisal has not started. A ring shows how many are signed, and a list of teachers not started yet has a Start button beside each name, so nobody is left out of the term's round.

While scoring, the person appraising sees what Temari already knows about the teacher's term, such as the marklists and weekly lesson plans that were approved. It is context to read, and it never scores anything by itself.

Also in this module

  • One appraisal per teacher per term
  • Drafts stay hidden from the teacher until they are submitted
  • Each teacher sees only their own appraisals
  • Approved marklists and lesson plans shown beside the form for context
  • Criteria copied into each appraisal, so a later change never touches a signed one

Common questions

Does it follow the Ministry of Education format?

Yes. Every school starts with the Ministry's eight criteria, each scored out of 5 and weighted to a total of 100. The school can keep them as they are or change them.

Who can write an appraisal?

The director, the principal and the school admin. A teacher sees only their own appraisals, and only once they are submitted.

Can a teacher disagree with an appraisal?

The teacher signs that they have read it and can add a comment of their own, which stays with the appraisal for anyone who reads it later.

Can we change the criteria?

Yes. Rename, reweight, reorder or add criteria. The weights must add up to 100 before the form can be saved, and Balance evenly can share them out for you.

What happens to old appraisals if we change the criteria?

Nothing. Each appraisal keeps the criteria and weights it was scored on, so a signed appraisal reads the same years later.

How often are teachers appraised?

Once per term. Each teacher has one appraisal for each term, so the record builds up year by year.

Does Temari score teachers automatically?

No. Temari shows approved marklists and lesson plans as context while a person scores, and every score is given by the person writing the appraisal.
