What the Minister said
Berhanu Nega (Prof.) spoke at a consultative forum with the presidents of the public universities. He said the mix of students in a university should carry that diversity through, and should be arranged in a way that strengthens tolerance and national unity.
On the practical side, he said the Ministry will put in place a new system, assisted by technology, from the coming academic year, to solve the problems seen in the universities around placing students and moving them between institutions.
He also raised money in the same forum, telling the universities to spend the budget allocated to them only on what it was allocated for, sparingly and with accountability.
Universities must tell the Ministry about transfers they agree between themselves
State Minister Kindeya Gebrehiwot (Prof.) added a narrower point at the same forum: when universities move students between themselves by agreement, they have to notify the Ministry of Education.
What this changes for a student choosing now
Nothing this week. The choice of university and field is open until ጳጉሜን 05 and is served by the portal that is running today. The new system was announced for the year after, and no portal, no date and no mechanism has been published for it.
