What has Ethiopia launched?
Birr Metrics reported on Tikimt 17, 2019 E.C. (27 October 2026) that the Ministry of Education has launched a pilot AI teaching assistant called the Agentic AI Teacher Assistant. The tool is built on textbooks for grades 9 to 12 and can generate lesson plans and exam questions.
According to the report, the Ministry launched the pilot in mid-October 2026 as a practical response to the country's limited connectivity. The tool is part of the Ethiopia Education Transformation Operation for Learning (ETOL) project. The project has total financing of about 226 million US dollars from the World Bank and partners, and the World Bank's IDA commitment within it is 50 million US dollars.
The report says the new assistant follows an earlier AI-Coach pilot with more than 350 English and mathematics teachers. That app runs on teachers' existing phones and keeps working when the internet goes down. Teachers in that pilot said its feedback was timely, relevant to their lessons and easy to use in class.
Which teachers and students does it affect?
The assistant is aimed at teachers working in the classroom, and its lesson content comes from grade 9 to 12 textbooks. The report does not say how many teachers or schools are in the pilot, or which regions it reaches. That detail has not been announced.
The report does not name students as users. It also does not say whether the new assistant covers the same subjects as the earlier English and mathematics pilot.

What can teachers do now?
Watch for the Ministry's notice
Follow the Ministry of Education for a notice naming the schools and teachers taking part, and confirm before you plan lessons around the tool.
Ask about your school
Ask your school director whether your school or your subject is part of the pilot, since the report does not list schools.
Check your laptop
The report says the tool runs on standard laptops without internet. Check whether the laptops in your school can run it.
What came before this tool?
The tool follows the AI-Coach pilot and is part of a wider skills agenda. At the World Bank's Human Capital Ministerial Conclave on Tikimt 9, 2019 E.C. (19 October 2026), National Bank Governor Eyob Tekalign (PhD) presented AI Coaches and AI Tutors for secondary schools. He also pointed to a new World Bank collaboration on an AI-enabled skills platform for technical and vocational training.
The report also says the education system faces foundational problems that predate the AI push. According to the World Bank, 90 percent of ten-year-olds in Ethiopia cannot read a simple sentence, and many teachers do not pass their licensing exams. For the earlier conclave, read Ethiopia seeks private money for AI and digital skills.
