When you use it

Use when distinguishing an algorithm from actual programming language source code.

Watch out

Algorithms are language-independent plain instructions. They must not include syntax tied to a specific programming language.

Drafted from Grade 10 Information Communication Technology, page 204 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

Flowchart SymbolFunction
OvalStart or End (Terminator)
ParallelogramInput or Output
RectangleProcess (Computation)
DiamondDecision (Conditional branching)
ArrowFlow line (Flow of control)

When you use it

Use when creating or interpreting graphical representations of algorithms.

Watch out

Do not confuse the parallelogram for input and output with the rectangle for processing.

Drafted from Grade 10 Information Communication Technology, page 204 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

IDE FeatureFunctionality
Code editorText editor designed to write and edit program source code
Compiler or InterpreterTranslates source code into machine executable instructions
DebuggerTests the software to identify and solve bugs
GUIConsolidates all development tools into a single central interface

When you use it

Use when explaining the integrated components that make up a software development environment.

Watch out

An IDE is not merely a text editor. It integrates source editing, compiling, and debugging tools.

Drafted from Grade 10 Information Communication Technology, page 204 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

Loop ComponentRole in Repetition
InitializationSets variables to initial values and sets the exit counter
ComputationExecutes the main processing steps of the loop
TestChecks the exit condition to avoid an endless loop
IncrementReinitializes or updates variables for the next loop

When you use it

Use when constructing or tracing repetitive algorithmic logic and loop controls.

Watch out

Omitting the test or increment condition causes an infinite loop error.

LevelWhat the code looks likeHow it becomes machine code
Machine language (low level)Nothing but 1s and 0s, written for one processor family. There is nothing to translate. The processor runs it as it stands.
Assembly language (low level)Short mnemonics such as MOV, ADD and JMP, one for each machine instruction, still tied to one processor family. An assembler turns every mnemonic into its machine instruction.
High level, compiledEnglish-like words, named variables, functions and control structures: C, C++, Java.A compiler translates the whole program first and produces a file that runs on its own. Java compiles to bytecode that a virtual machine then runs.
High level, interpretedThe same English-like code: Python, JavaScript, PHP. JavaScript and PHP are also called scripting because they run inside a host program such as a browser or a web server. An interpreter translates and runs one statement at a time.
Markup (not a programming language)Tags that label structure or appearance: HTML, XML, CSS.A browser displays the tags. There is no decision and no loop, so nothing is computed.

When you use it

Reach for this when a question asks which level a language belongs to, or what turns written code into something the processor can run. Every language above machine code passes through a translator first: an assembler, a compiler or an interpreter.

Watch out

Asked to name a programming language, students write HTML. Put every candidate through one test: can it decide or repeat? HTML has no if and no loop, so it only tags what a page contains, while Python decides what to do with it. The same slip runs the other way when C is filed as low level because it sits close to the machine. Low level means machine code and assembly, nothing else.

Practice questions on unit 6

10 multiple-choice questions written against this chapter, each with its answer and the reason. Try one before you open the answer.

Question 1

What is an algorithm?

  1. A.A physical component inside the computer processor
  2. B.A precise, step-by-step method of solving a problem
  3. C.A network protocol used for browsing web pages
  4. D.A harmful software program designed to corrupt files
Show the answer and why

Answer: B A precise, step-by-step method of solving a problem

Why

An algorithm is defined as a precise method of solving a problem consisting of a sequence of unambiguous, step-by-step instructions.

Question 2

What is a flowchart?

  1. A.A graphical or schematic representation of the steps in a process
  2. B.A high-level programming language code editor
  3. C.An automated testing tool for hardware devices
  4. D.A set of database records stored on a hard drive
Show the answer and why

Answer: A A graphical or schematic representation of the steps in a process

Why

A flowchart is a visual or schematic diagram that shows the major steps of work in a process using symbols and arrows.

Question 3

What does the abbreviation IDE stand for in computer programming?

  1. A.Indented Development Entity
  2. B.Individually Determined Environment
  3. C.Integrated Development Environment
  4. D.Integrated Dynamic Entity
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Integrated Development Environment

Why

IDE stands for Integrated Development Environment, which is an application that facilitates software development by combining coding, building, and debugging tools.

Question 4

An algorithm is described in terms of which three main activities?

  1. A.Input, process, and output
  2. B.Hardware, software, and liveware
  3. C.Internet, intranet, and extranet
  4. D.Scanning, printing, and saving
Show the answer and why

Answer: A Input, process, and output

Why

Every algorithm takes well-defined inputs, performs a process (computation), and produces a well-defined output.

Question 5

Which characteristic of an algorithm states that it must terminate and not run endlessly in an infinite loop?

  1. A.Feasibility
  2. B.Language independence
  3. C.Finiteness
  4. D.Unambiguity
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Finiteness

Why

Finiteness means that an algorithm must terminate after a finite number of steps and must not enter into infinite loops.

Question 6

Which of the following is considered a disadvantage of using algorithms?

  1. A.They are easy to understand for beginners.
  2. B.They are independent of programming languages.
  3. C.They break down complex problems into smaller steps.
  4. D.Branching and looping statements are difficult to show.
Show the answer and why

Answer: D Branching and looping statements are difficult to show.

Why

According to the textbook, disadvantages of algorithms are that writing them is time-consuming and that branching and looping statements are difficult to show.

Question 7

In a loop structure, which part represents the actual processing step?

  1. A.Initialization
  2. B.Computation
  3. C.Increment
  4. D.Test
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Computation

Why

A loop consists of four parts: initialization (setting initial values), computation (processing), test (checking exit condition), and increment (re-initialization for the next pass).

Question 8

Which fundamental feature of an IDE translates human-readable source code into a language that a computer can execute?

  1. A.Debugger
  2. B.Text editor
  3. C.Compiler
  4. D.Class browser
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Compiler

Why

A compiler is a tool that transforms source code written in a human-readable language into machine code executable by the computer.

  2. B.Pseudocode uses English-language statements without rigid syntax rules.
  3. C.Pseudocode can only be executed on mobile operating systems.
  4. D.Pseudocode is drawn purely with geometric flowchart symbols.
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Pseudocode uses English-language statements without rigid syntax rules.

Why

Pseudocode is a program design aid that expresses program logic using structured English statements without being bound by rigid programming language syntax rules.
