When you use it

Use this when a question asks how desertification differs from land degradation or what causes desertification.

Watch out

Desertification is land degradation only in dry, arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. Land degradation can also occur in wetter areas. Its causes are mainly human, although deserts also occur naturally next to cold ocean currents and in continental interiors.

When you use it

Use this when a question asks you to tell family and household apart or to describe household types.

Watch out

A family is bound by blood, kinship or marriage, so it cannot contain more than one household. A household is people who share food and shelter, and it may include unrelated people or consist only of unrelated people. Do not write that every household is a family.

Drought typeMeaning in this chapter
MeteorologicalAn extended shortfall of rainfall
HydrologicalBelow-normal water flow in lakes, streams and underground sources
AgriculturalA deficit of moisture in the topsoil, which affects crop growth
EnvironmentalThe three types above combined
SocioeconomicAn imbalance between supply and demand of goods such as water, fodder, food crops, fish and energy

When you use it

Use this when a question asks you to name the types of drought or to say what each type measures.

Watch out

The types are not five rival causes. The first three combine to form environmental drought, and socioeconomic drought is the imbalance between supply and demand that links to them.
