When you use it
When a point in the body needs extra explanation, a pointer to a fuller source, or an explanation of a new word, mark it in the text and write the note at the foot of the page.
Watch out
The same mark must appear in the body and again at the foot note. A mark without its note, or a note without a mark in the text, loses marks. Use an asterisk (*) for a single note, and numbers if the notes run in sequence.
