What did the four universities agree in Mekelle?
Tikvah Education and Tikvah University reported on Tikimt 7 and 8, 2019 E.C. (17 and 18 October 2026) that officials had met in Mekelle to review how Mekelle, Adigrat, Aksum and Raya universities can resume teaching and learning.
The meeting was led by Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, an adviser to the Minister of Education with the rank of state minister. He urged the four universities to work together so that students can continue their studies. Leaders of the four universities confirmed they were ready to keep teaching and learning going, and they named the support they need from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and other federal bodies.
Kulu Media reported that Dr. Gebremichael Woldegebriel, president of Adigrat University, said the university had finished preparing to receive students and resume academic and administrative work. The same report said Professor Kindeya praised the community around Adigrat University for helping protect its facilities.
The four universities agreed to set up a joint cooperation forum to improve communication, coordinate academic work and strengthen collaboration. Its representatives will meet at Raya University in Hidar 2019 E.C. (November 2026) to draft an initial framework.
The Ministry of Education has not specified an exact date for resuming classes.
Which students and staff does this affect?
The meeting concerns students, teachers and administrators at the four universities, whose academic work has been disrupted by renewed insecurity in the region. The reports do not say which grades, colleges or departments will return first.
Prospective new students are also affected, because the ministry halted new placements at these four universities. The reports do not say whether that halt still applies.

What led to this review?
Kulu Media reported that the Ministry of Education halted new student placements at the same four universities in September 2026 (Meskerem 2019 E.C.) over concerns about armed personnel and military activity on campuses. The same report says that in August 2026 the Tigray Education Bureau warned that reported air and drone strikes had damaged schools and threatened preparations for the new academic year.
Kulu Media also reported that Tigray authorities had planned entrance examinations after delays in the delivery of federal examination materials. For the adviser's visit, read Education adviser reviews Tigray universities in Mekelle.
