When you use it

Use when identifying the signs and reactions of anode and cathode in electrochemical cells.

Watch out

Oxidation ALWAYS occurs at the anode and reduction at the cathode in both cells. The anode is negative in a Galvanic cell, but positive in an electrolytic cell.

Practice questions on unit 4

10 multiple-choice questions written against this chapter, each with its answer and the reason. Try one before you open the answer.

Question 1

For an exothermic chemical reaction, what is the sign and value of the enthalpy change (ΔH)?

 1. A.Positive, ΔH > 0
 2. B.Negative, ΔH < 0
 3. C.Zero, ΔH = 0
 4. D.It is always undefined
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Negative, ΔH < 0

Why

In an exothermic reaction, heat is released to the surroundings, meaning the enthalpy of products is less than the enthalpy of reactants. Therefore, ΔH is negative (ΔH < 0).

Question 2

What are the charge carriers responsible for electrical conductivity in electrolytic solutions?

 1. A.Delocalized electrons only
 2. B.Protons and neutrons
 3. C.Cations and anions
 4. D.Neutral molecules
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Cations and anions

Why

Electrolytic conduction occurs due to the movement of ions (positively charged cations and negatively charged anions) through the solution or molten salt.

Question 3

In a Daniell voltaic cell, what is the primary role of the salt bridge?

 1. A.To provide mechanical strength to the electrodes
 2. B.To maintain electrical neutrality between the two solutions
 3. C.To supply electrons directly to the external circuit
 4. D.To stop the flow of ions between compartments
Show the answer and why

Answer: B To maintain electrical neutrality between the two solutions

Why

The salt bridge allows ions to flow between the two half-cell compartments to maintain electrical neutrality so that the cell can continue to generate electricity.

Question 4

Which of the following is classified as a rechargeable secondary voltaic cell?

 1. A.Daniell cell
 2. B.Zinc-carbon (Leclanche) cell
 3. C.Lead storage battery
 4. D.Dry cell
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Lead storage battery

Why

A lead storage battery is a secondary cell because the chemical reactions are reversible and the battery can be recharged by passing a direct electric current through it.

Question 5

What is the SI unit of heat capacity according to the textbook?

 1. A.Joule per Kelvin (J/K)
 2. B.Joule per gram (J/g)
 3. C.Calorie per gram (cal/g)
 4. D.Kelvin per Joule (K/J)
Show the answer and why

Answer: A Joule per Kelvin (J/K)

Why

Heat capacity is defined as the quantity of heat required to change the temperature of an object by 1 K (Heat capacity = q/ΔT), so its unit is Joule per Kelvin (J/K).

Question 6

How does an increase in temperature affect metallic conduction and electrolytic conduction?

 1. A.Metallic conduction increases, electrolytic conduction decreases
 2. B.Metallic conduction decreases, electrolytic conduction increases
 3. C.Both metallic and electrolytic conduction increase
 4. D.Both metallic and electrolytic conduction decrease
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Metallic conduction decreases, electrolytic conduction increases

Why

In metals, higher temperatures increase the vibration of kernels and create obstacles to electron flow, decreasing conductivity. In electrolytes, higher temperatures increase ion mobility, increasing conductivity.

Question 7

In a zinc-carbon dry cell (Leclanche cell), which component serves as the anode?

 1. A.The central graphite rod
 2. B.The outer zinc can
 3. C.The manganese dioxide paste
 4. D.The ammonium chloride solution
Show the answer and why

Answer: B The outer zinc can

Why

The Leclanche dry cell uses the zinc can as the anode, where zinc is oxidized to Zn2+, and a central graphite rod surrounded by paste as the cathode.

Question 8

A 12 V car battery used in Hawassa contains how many individual lead-storage cells connected in series, and what voltage does each cell deliver?

 1. A.8 cells, each delivering 1.5 V
 2. B.6 cells, each delivering 2.0 V
 3. C.12 cells, each delivering 1.0 V
 4. D.4 cells, each delivering 3.0 V
Show the answer and why

Answer: B 6 cells, each delivering 2.0 V

Why

Each single lead-storage cell delivers about 2 V. Therefore, six cells connected in series provide a total of 12 V.

Question 9

During the commercial electrolysis of molten sodium chloride (NaCl), what half-reaction occurs at the cathode?

 1. A.Na+(l) + e- → Na(l)
 2. B.Cl-(l) → 1/2 Cl2(g) + e-
 3. C.Na(l) → Na+(l) + e-
 4. D.2H2O(l) + 2e- → H2(g) + 2OH-(aq)
Show the answer and why

Answer: A Na+(l) + e- → Na(l)

Why

Reduction always takes place at the cathode. In molten NaCl, positive sodium ions (Na+) gain electrons to form liquid sodium metal: Na+(l) + e- → Na(l).

Question 10

When an automobile lead-storage battery is discharging (in operation), what solid substance is formed at both the anode and the cathode?

 1. A.PbO2(s)
 2. B.Pb(s)
 3. C.PbSO4(s)
 4. D.Pb(OH)2(s)
Show the answer and why

Answer: C PbSO4(s)

Why

During discharge, the anode reaction converts Pb to PbSO4(s), and the cathode reaction converts PbO2 to PbSO4(s). Thus, lead(II) sulfate is produced at both electrodes.
