Question 1

Abebe is a pedestrian in Addis Ababa. According to the passage, where should he walk?

  1. A.in the middle of the road, between the cars
  2. B.on the paving or sidewalk that is allowed for pedestrians
  3. C.on the right side of the road only
  4. D.wherever he likes, because the roads are safe
Show the answer and why

Answer: B on the paving or sidewalk that is allowed for pedestrians

Why

Paragraph 3 says that because mobility in big cities is very high, you should walk on the paving or sidewalk that is allowed for pedestrians. Walking in the middle of the road or wherever you like is not safe.

Question 2

What does the passage advise about wearing valuable ornaments in a big city?

  1. A.Wear them to look attractive when you walk in the city.
  2. B.Avoid wearing them, because they expose you to thieves.
  3. C.Wear them only at night.
  4. D.Give them to strangers for safe keeping.
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Avoid wearing them, because they expose you to thieves.

Why

Paragraph 3 says: avoid wearing valuable ornaments as they expose you to thieves. So the correct advice is to avoid wearing them.

Question 3

According to the passage, in which place do most pick-pockets prefer to work?

  1. A.in very crowded places
  2. B.on empty roads at night
  3. C.in schools and colleges
  4. D.in government offices
Show the answer and why

Answer: A in very crowded places

Why

Paragraph 3 says that most pick-pockets prefer very crowded places to loot different items of value. So you should take maximum care when you walk in such places.

Question 4

Which word shows strong advice or a strong warning?

  1. A.should
  2. B.ought to
  3. C.suggest
  4. D.must
Show the answer and why

Answer: D must

Why

The short note says we use 'must' and 'have/has to' to give strong warning or advice. 'Should' and 'ought to' give a weaker form of advice, and 'suggest' and 'had better' are used for polite advice.

Question 5

In paragraph 1, the passage says: It is very cumbersome to avoid the need to travel. In this sentence, the word cumbersome means:

  1. A.boring because of repetitions
  2. B.difficult or challenging
  3. C.a course of study offered in schools
  4. D.a feeling of happiness or satisfaction
Show the answer and why

Answer: B difficult or challenging

Why

In Activity 2.11, cumbersome is given the meaning 'difficult or challenging'. The sentence says it is hard to avoid the need to travel, so 'difficult or challenging' fits.

Question 6

Read this sentence from a student's story: I drove my car to the gas station to fill up my car tank with gas. What does fill up mean here?

  1. A.to make something completely full
  2. B.to empty something completely
  3. C.to sign a form
  4. D.to find something that was lost
Show the answer and why

Answer: A to make something completely full

Why

In the phrasal verb section, 'fill up' is used with a tank and gas. It means to make the tank completely full. Phrasal verbs often have a meaning that is different from the single words in them, so check the meaning in a dictionary.

Question 7

Which description of the sound [p] is correct?

  1. A.Bring your upper and lower lips together and send out a puff of air.
  2. B.Put your upper teeth on your lower lip.

  4. D.Touch your tongue to the roof of your mouth without air.
Show the answer and why

Answer: A Bring your upper and lower lips together and send out a puff of air.

Why

The textbook says [p] is pronounced by bringing your upper and lower lips together and sending out the puff of air. Putting your upper teeth on your lower lip is how the sound [f] is made.

Question 8

Which sentence is a compound sentence?

  1. A.Halefom visited Wolaita Sodo yesterday.
  2. B.Halefom visited Wolaita Sodo and went back to Addis Ababa.
  3. C.Ujulu likes reading and Megersa prefers to listen to TV.
  4. D.Although Halefom was tired, he visited Wolaita Sodo.
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Ujulu likes reading and Megersa prefers to listen to TV.

Why

A compound sentence has two independent clauses joined by a connector such as 'and', 'but' or 'yet'. 'Ujulu likes reading' and 'Megersa prefers to listen to TV' are two clauses joined by 'and'. Option B has one subject and two verbs, so it is still a simple sentence. Option D has a subordinate clause, so it is complex.

Question 9

Which sentence is a complex sentence?

  1. A.Halefom visited Wolaita Sodo and went back to Addis Ababa.
  2. B.Ujulu likes reading and Megersa prefers to listen to TV.
  3. C.Although she likes her birth place, she prefers to live in Dire Dawa.
  4. D.Both of them like to visit Addis Ababa; yet, they do not have enough money.
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Although she likes her birth place, she prefers to live in Dire Dawa.

Why

A complex sentence has one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses. The subordinate clause here starts with 'Although'. 'Although' is one of the subordinating conjunctions in the note. Option A is simple, and options B and D are compound.

Question 10

In a summary, what should the last sentence do?

  1. A.Repeat the first sentence of the original text word for word.
  2. B.Wrap up or give a conclusion to the summarized ideas, in your own words.
  3. C.Add your own opinion about the topic.
  4. D.Copy one example from the original text.
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Wrap up or give a conclusion to the summarized ideas, in your own words.

Why

The short note on summarizing says the last sentence of your summary should wrap up or give a conclusion to the summarized ideas in your own words. A summary must not include your own opinions, interpretations or comments.
