When you use it

Use these clauses to show the intended purpose or goal of the action in the main clause, introduced by words such as so that, in order that, in order to, for fear that, or lest.

Watch out

Do not confuse clauses of purpose with clauses of cause or result. Remember that conjunctions like lest and for fear that express a negative purpose without needing extra negative words.

When you use it

Use the simple past for a finished event in the past, and use the past perfect for an earlier event that was completed before another past action occurred.

Watch out

Do not use the past perfect when only one isolated past action is mentioned without an earlier time frame.

According to the Human Rights Watch report (2018), where do Ethiopian migrants encounter exploitation and torture?

  1. A.Yemen
  2. B.Addis Ababa
  3. C.Djibouti
  4. D.Somalia
Show the answer and why

Answer: A Yemen

Why

The listening passage says Ethiopians who make the perilous journey by boat "encounter exploitation and torture in Yemen by a network of trafficking groups." Addis Ababa is where migrants are deported to, not where the torture happens.

  1. C.Drought and ecological degradation
  2. B.Human rights abuses
  3. A.Lack of decent livelihood and employment opportunities
  4. D.Economic and political violence

Why

The passage says that economic and political violence, ecological degradation, drought and human rights abuses all contribute, but "lack of decent livelihood and employment opportunities are identified as the main driving forces."

Question 3

  1. A.day
  2. B.bath
  3. C.life
  4. D.girl
Show the answer and why

Answer: C life

Why

  3. C.one-fifth
  4. D.two-thirds

Question 5

According to the Human Rights Watch interview, about 10,000 Ethiopians per month were deported from Saudi Arabia to Ethiopia. Between which dates did this happen?

  1. A.May 2017 and March 2019
  2. B.January 2016 and March 2019
  3. C.May 2013 and March 2019
  4. D.May 2017 and May 2018

Answer: A May 2017 and March 2019

The listening passage states that about an average of 10,000 per month "were deported from Saudi Arabia to Ethiopia between May 2017 and March 2019." The passage also says the deportation has continued up to the present.

Question 6

In which year did the government of Ethiopia impose a ban on migration to the Middle East?

  1. A.2016
  2. B.2013
  3. C.2017
  4. D.2019
Show the answer and why

Answer: B 2013

Why

The reading passage says: "The government of Ethiopia imposed a ban on migration to the Middle East in 2013." The passage also says the law did not reduce the problem. The year 2016 appears in the text only for the figure about January 2016 in Yemen.

Question 7

Which sentence connector means "as a result"?

  1. A.although
  2. B.whereas
  3. C.unless
  4. D.consequently
Show the answer and why

Answer: D consequently

Why

The unit lists "consequently" and "as a result" as cause and effect connectors. Both show that something happened because of an earlier cause. "Although," "whereas" and "unless" show contrast or condition, not cause and effect.

Question 8

Which conjunction introduces a clause of purpose?

  1. A.because
  2. B.although
  3. C.so that
  4. D.unless
Show the answer and why

Answer: C so that

Why

A clause of purpose tells you why the action in the main clause is done. The unit lists "so that" as one of the conjunctions used for purpose, for example: "Our farmers are these days using new technologies ... so that they can save time and energy."

Question 9

Choose the phrasal verb that correctly completes this sentence from the unit: "The second group are people who ___ the limit when they argue with others for or against a given issue."

  1. A.go in for
  2. B.go beyond
  3. C.go by
  4. D.go down
Show the answer and why

Answer: B go beyond

Why

"Go beyond" is the phrasal verb from the list that fits the sentence. The people in this group pass the limit when they argue. The other options do not fit the meaning of passing over a limit.

Question 10

Which sentence has the correctly written compound word?

  1. A.The commander-in-chiefs in all war fronts have never lived their own life.
  2. B.The commanders-in-chief in all war fronts have never lived their own life.
  3. C.The commanders-in-chiefs in all war fronts have never lived their own life.
  4. D.The commander-in-chief in all war fronts have never lived their own life.
Show the answer and why

Answer: B The commanders-in-chief in all war fronts have never lived their own life.

Why

In a compound noun such as "commander-in-chief," the main word takes the plural. Here the main word is "commanders," so the plural form is "commanders-in-chief." The other options either pluralise the wrong part or do not match the subject.
