PrincipleKey Rule
Original HorizontalityLayers of sediments are originally deposited horizontally under the action of gravity.
SuperpositionIn an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks, the overlying bed is younger than the underlying rock.
Cross-Cutting RelationshipsA rock layer or intrusion that cuts across another rock layer is younger than the rocks it cross-cuts.

When you use it

Use when determining the chronological order of rock formation and geological events without numerical dates.

Watch out

Superposition applies only to undisturbed sedimentary beds. Rock deformation or tilting after deposition changes original layer orientation.

1150505050
2225257575
3312.512.587.587.5

When you use it

Use when solving absolute age problems based on the proportion of parent to daughter isotopes in rocks.

Watch out

A half-life is the time for half of the remaining parent isotope to decay, not the time for the entire material to disappear.

Practice questions on unit 6

10 multiple-choice questions written against this chapter, each with its answer and the reason. Try one before you open the answer.

Question 1

According to the Big Bang theory presented in the textbook, about how many years ago was the Earth formed?

  1. A.4.5 billion years ago
  2. B.10 to 20 billion years ago
  3. C.750 million years ago
  4. D.160 million years ago
Show the answer and why

Answer: A 4.5 billion years ago

Why

The universe originated 10 to 20 billion years ago, but the Earth was created from gas and dust particles about 4.5 billion years ago.

Question 2

Which continent is the only one in the world crossed by the Equator, the Tropic of Cancer, and the Tropic of Capricorn?

  1. A.Asia
  2. B.Africa
  3. C.South America
  4. D.Australia
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Africa

Why

Africa is the only continent on Earth that is crossed by all three lines of latitude: the Equator, the Tropic of Cancer, and the Tropic of Capricorn.

Question 3

What is the deepest point in the world, located in the Pacific Ocean?

  1. A.Puerto Rico Trench
  2. B.Java Trench
  3. C.Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench
  4. D.South Sandwich Trench
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench

Why

The deepest point in the world is the Challenger Deep within the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, reaching a depth of about 10,924 meters.

Question 4

Which principle of relative dating states that in an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks, the overlying layer is younger than the underlying layer?

  1. A.Principle of original horizontality
  2. B.Principle of cross-cutting relationships
  3. C.Principle of superposition
  4. D.Principle of radioactive decay
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Principle of superposition

Why

The principle of superposition states that in an undisturbed sedimentary rock sequence, older layers are at the bottom and younger layers are deposited on top.

Question 5

What is the ratio of land to ocean in the Southern Hemisphere?

  1. A.1:1.5
  2. B.1:4
  3. C.1:1
  4. D.4:1
Show the answer and why

Answer: B 1:4

Why

In the Northern Hemisphere, the ratio of land to ocean is about 1:1.5, whereas in the Southern Hemisphere, it is 1:4 due to the vast coverage of water.

Question 6

After two half-lives of radioactive decay, what percentage of the original parent isotope remains?

  1. A.50%
  2. B.75%
  3. C.25%
  4. D.12.5%
Show the answer and why

Answer: C 25%

Why

After one half-life, 50% of the parent isotope remains. After two half-lives, that amount is halved again, leaving 25% parent isotope and 75% daughter product.

Question 7

Which geological period in the Paleozoic era is commonly referred to as the "age of fish"?

  1. A.Cambrian
  2. B.Silurian
  3. C.Devonian
  4. D.Permian
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Devonian

Why

The Devonian period, which lasted from 360 to 408 Ma, was rich in fish species and is called the age of fish.

Question 8

At about 140 Ma, which landmass moved northward and separated from Gondwanaland, eventually colliding with Eurasia to form the Himalayas?

  1. A.Australia
  2. B.The Indian sub-continent
  3. C.North America
  4. D.Antarctica
Show the answer and why

Answer: B The Indian sub-continent

Why

The landmass that became the Indian sub-continent separated from Gondwana at about 140 Ma and drifted north to collide with Eurasia, creating the Himalayan mountain range.

Question 9

According to the textbook data on radioactive dating, which parent isotope has a half-life of 1.25 billion years?

  1. A.Potassium-40 (40K)
  2. B.Rubidium-87 (87Rb)
  3. C.Carbon-14 (14C)
  4. D.Uranium-235 (235U)
Show the answer and why

Answer: A Potassium-40 (40K)

Why

Potassium-40 (40K) decays into Argon-40 (40Ar) with a half-life of 1.25 billion years.

Question 10

Which ocean basin receives more freshwater from continental runoff than any other ocean basin on Earth?

  1. A.Pacific Ocean
  2. B.Atlantic Ocean
  3. C.Indian Ocean
  4. D.Arctic Ocean
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Atlantic Ocean

Why

The Atlantic Ocean drains massive river systems such as the Amazon, Congo, Mississippi, and St. Lawrence, receiving more continental freshwater runoff than any other ocean.
