TermMeaning
GultThe right to levy tribute on the owners of Rist land and its produce
RistA hereditary right to use land, held by families and clans whose ancestors kept the land for a long time
Bale GultThe holder of a Gult right, who collected tribute, kept most of it, used corvee labour, maintained law and order, and raised a regional army

When you use it

Use this card when an exam asks how the Gult system worked, or what the difference was between Gult and Rist in the medieval Christian kingdom.

Watch out

Gult is the right to collect tribute, while Rist is the hereditary right to use land. Do not swap them: the Bale Gult held the tribute right, not the land itself.

DateEvent
1527Imam Ahmad attacks the Christian forces stationed in Dawaro, Fatagar and Bali
March 1529Ahmad crushes the army of Libne Dingil at the battle of Shimbra Kure
1531Ahmad annexes Dawaro and Bali

February 1543Gelawdewos, with Portuguese musketeers, defeats Ahmad at Woyna Dega, and Ahmad is killed
1559The army of Adal under Emir Nur al-Wazir defeats Gelawdewos, who is killed

When you use it

Use this card when a question asks you to order the wars between Adal under Imam Ahmad and the Christian kingdom, or to say how Ahmad's power rose and ended.

Watch out

Adal's supremacy ended at Woyna Dega in 1543, not in 1559. The 1559 battle was a later Adal victory over King Gelawdewos, so do not put it as the end of Ahmad's rule.

When you use it

Use this card when asked why Adal fought the Christian highland kingdom in the 1520s to 1540s, or what the wars were about.

Watch out

The chapter says Imam Ahmad's war was not over religion. It was the last stage of earlier conflicts between the Walasma sultans and the Christian kings over the Zeyla trade and the lands the trade routes crossed.

Question 1

Who founded the new dynasty in Amhara around 1270?

  1. A.Amde Tsiyon
  2. B.Yikuno Amlak
  3. C.Imam Ahmad
  4. D.Zer`a Ya`ekob
Show the answer and why

Answer: B Yikuno Amlak

Why

Yikuno Amlak was a local ruler in Amhara who founded the new dynasty, called the "Solomonic" dynasty, around 1270. Amde Tsiyon came later (r. 1314-44), Imam Ahmad led Adal, and Zer`a Ya`ekob ruled from 1434 to 1468.

Question 2

Why was the mountain fortress of Amba Gishen established around 1300?

  1. A.To serve as a trade port on the Gulf of Aden
  2. B.To stop fights over the throne among the descendants of Yikuno Amlak
  3. C.To serve as the first capital of the kingdom at Lalibela
  4. D.To store the Kibre Negest book for the Sultanates
Show the answer and why

Answer: B To stop fights over the throne among the descendants of Yikuno Amlak

Why

The succession problem was serious, and five kings ruled briefly between 1294 and 1299. Amba Gishen, also called Debre Negest, kept the male descendants of Yikuno Amlak (except his sons) away from power. This helped the dynasty pass power smoothly.

Question 3

Which port replaced the Red Sea coast as the main gateway for internal and external trade between 1270 and 1529?

  1. A.The Dahlak Islands
  2. B.Harar
  3. C.Zeyla
  4. D.Lake Hayk
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Zeyla

Why

The textbook says that during 1270 to 1529, Zeyla replaced the Red Sea coast as the main gateway for trade. That is why this trade is called the Zeyla trade. Harar was an inland centre, and Lake Hayk was a royal capital area.

Question 4

In the Gult system, what was a Gult?

  1. A.A hereditary right to use land held by a family for a long time
  2. B.A right to collect tribute from the owners of Rist land and its produce
  3. C.A regional army raised from the Rist land owners
  4. D.A royal court that moved from one district to another
Show the answer and why

Answer: B A right to collect tribute from the owners of Rist land and its produce

Why

The textbook defines Gult as the right to levy tribute on the owners of Rist land and its produce. Option A describes Rist, not Gult. Raising a regional army was a duty of the Bale Gult, not the definition of Gult itself.

Question 5

In March 1529, which leader defeated the army of King Libne Dingil at the battle of Shimbra Kure?

  1. A.Sultan Ahmad Badlay
  2. B.Emir Mahfuz
  3. C.Imam Ahmad of Adal
  4. D.Sa`ad ad-Din II
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Imam Ahmad of Adal

Why

The chapter says that in March 1529, a coalition of Muslim lowlanders led by Imam Ahmad of Adal defeated King Libne Dingil's army at Shimbra Kure. Ahmad Badlay died in 1445, Mahfuz was killed in 1517, and Sa`ad ad-Din II fought in the late 14th and early 15th centuries.

Question 6

In 1520, the centre of the Sultanate of Adal was shifted from Dakar to which town?

  1. A.Harar
  2. B.Debre Birhan
  3. C.Aksum
  4. D.Dembiya
Show the answer and why

Answer: A Harar

Why

The textbook says Adal was first centred at Dakar, south east of Harar, and that in 1520 its centre was shifted to Harar. Debre Birhan was a centre used by Imam Ahmad, Aksum was under his control, and Dembiya was his last centre.

Question 7

King Zer`a Ya`ekob founded the town of Debre Birhan in 1454. For how many years did he live there after founding it?

  1. A.Four years
  2. B.Seven years
  3. C.Ten years
  4. D.Fourteen years
Show the answer and why

Answer: D Fourteen years

Why

The chapter states that Zer`a Ya`ekob founded Debre Birhan in 1454 and subsequently lived there for fourteen years. This was one of the examples of a king who stayed in one place, which was a change from the moving capitals.

Question 8

After the final battle of 1332, where did the Ifat ruler Sabr ad-Din escape to?

  1. A.Yemen
  2. B.Adal
  3. C.Dawaro
  4. D.Bali
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Dawaro

Why

The textbook says that in the final battle the army of Ifat was defeated and Sabr ad-Din escaped to the neighbouring Sultanate of Dawaro. Amde Tsiyon then captured him there. Yemen was where the sons of Sa`ad ad-Din II took refuge.

Question 9

What happened to Imam Ahmad at the battle of Woyna Dega in February 1543?

  1. A.He was captured by King Gelawdewos and taken to Gondar
  2. B.He was shot by a Portuguese musketeer and died soon after
  3. C.He escaped to Yemen with the Ottoman troops
  4. D.He won the battle and became ruler of the highlands
Show the answer and why

Answer: B He was shot by a Portuguese musketeer and died soon after

Why

The chapter says Gelawdewos led the combined Ethiopian and Portuguese forces and defeated the Imam's army at Woyna Dega. Ahmad was shot by a Portuguese musketeer and died soon after. Gondar was not founded until 1636, so it could not have been where he was taken.

Question 10

According to the chapter, what was the main cause of Imam Ahmad's war against the Christian highland kingdom?

  1. A.A religious war to convert the Christian highlands to Islam
  2. B.The earlier conflict over control of the Zeyla trade and the lands on its routes
  3. C.A dispute over the Gult rights of the Bale Gult
  4. D.A demand for the return of the Kibre Negest
Show the answer and why

Answer: B The earlier conflict over control of the Zeyla trade and the lands on its routes

Why

The textbook clearly says the war was not mainly religious. It was the last stage of earlier conflicts between the Walasma Sultans and the Christian kings over the Zeyla trade and the lands through which trade routes passed. Option A is the choice the text rejects.
