ጥበባዊ ግንዛቤ

When you use it

Use this when you draw people, animals and objects together and their sizes must look true to life. Steps: 1. Go to a place where people, animals and objects can be seen together. 2. Observe how their sizes differ and how close they are to each other. 3. Decide how you will measure them. 4. Mark their sizes on your drawing paper in the same ratio.

Watch out

Keep the size of every object in the same ratio. If the sizes are not kept, the drawing loses its true appearance.

When you use it

Use this when you must mix a new colour from watercolour paints in an art practical. Steps: 1. Set out the prepared watercolour paints and brush with clean water. 2. Get the paper ready for work. 3. Mix the colours with water on the brush until you reach the blend you want. 4. Paint on the prepared paper. 5. Check that you have achieved the colour mix you wanted.

02

ፈጠራን መግለፅ

When you use it

Use this when making a potato block print: draw the design on a cut potato, cut away the potato around the design so the design stands raised, then ink it and press it onto paper or cloth.

Watch out

Cut away the area OUTSIDE the design, not the design itself. Only the raised design carries ink, so cutting it away leaves a blank print.

FACE

When you use it

Use this when you must name a note written on the treble clef staff. The first row gives the five lines from the bottom upward, and the second row gives the four spaces from the bottom upward.

Watch out

Number the staff from the bottom, not the top, so the first line is E. Students often read the spaces as the lines, so check which row you are reading before you name the note.

03

ታሪካዊና ባህላዊ አውዶች

When you use it

Use this when answering the true or false, fill-in and matching questions at the end of a chapter. Read the statement, find the sentence in the chapter that defines the term, then mark it true if it matches that sentence, or false if a term has been changed.

Watch out

Architecture (ኪነ-ህንፃ) is one of the five art fields listed with literature, music, painting and sculpture, so a statement that leaves it out of the arts is false.

04

ሥነ ውበታዊ ዕሴት (ዋጋ)

When you use it

Reach for this when asked how dance, music and drama relate in a folk performance such as a traditional song.

Watch out

Do not treat dance, music and drama as separate arts. In a folk performance they are parts of one act and cannot be separated. A folk song combines melody, poetry, dialogue, characters, the matching of verses and eskista together.

05

ጥምርታ ዝምድናና ትግበራ

When you use it

Reach for this when asked which traffic safety principles protect a pedestrian, or how to cross a road safely.

Watch out

Do not try to cross from behind a parked vehicle, because the driver and other vehicles cannot see you.

Drafted from Grade 5 Performing and Visual Arts, pages 112-132, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Reach for this when asked whether HIV can pass through everyday contact, such as handshakes, hugging, kissing, shared toilets, food or insect bites.

Watch out

Do not list handshakes, hugging or kissing as ways HIV spreads: the chapter states that HIV cannot be passed by these everyday contacts.

Questions students ask

What do the Grade 5 Performing and Visual Arts cards cover?
9 cards across 5 chapters of the national textbook: ጥበባዊ ግንዛቤ, ፈጠራን መግለፅ, ታሪካዊና ባህላዊ አውዶች, ሥነ ውበታዊ ዕሴት (ዋጋ) and ጥምርታ ዝምድናና ትግበራ. You can take any chapter one card at a time on the page itself.
Is there a national exam in Grade 5?
No. Ethiopia sets national exams in Grade 6, Grade 8 and Grade 12 only. These cards are for your school's own exams, and for the national exam that comes a few years later.
Where do these cards come from?
They are drafted from Grade 5 Performing and Visual Arts, the Ministry of Education textbook for this grade. A second pass that cannot see the chapter then re-derives every formula, constant and table row, and anything it cannot confirm is held back instead of published.
Is this free?
Yes. Every card here is free to read and the printable sheet is free to download. Neither needs an account.
When was this last checked?
12 October 2026. Cards arrive chapter by chapter, and the line under each one says when that card was last read through.

Revise, then test yourself

Temari turns these cards into practice questions and marks them as you go, with an AI tutor to explain anything that did not land.
