Question 1

Who introduced volleyball?

  1. A.Dr. Halstead
  2. B.William G. Morgan
  3. C.Paul Libaud
  4. D.Ruben Acosta
Show the answer and why

Answer: B William G. Morgan

Why

The textbook says volleyball was introduced by William G. Morgan, a physical education director at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Dr. Halstead only suggested the name "Volleyball" in 1896. Paul Libaud and Ruben Acosta are linked to the FIVB, not to the invention of the game.

Question 2

What was the original name of the game that William G. Morgan first created?

  1. A.Volleyball
  2. B.Netball
  3. C.Spikeball
  4. D.Mintonette
Show the answer and why

Answer: D Mintonette

Why

The textbook says Morgan first named the game "Mintonette". In 1896 Dr. Halstead suggested changing the name to "Volleyball" because the basic idea of the game was to volley the ball back and forth over the net.

Question 3

In which place was volleyball first introduced in 1895?

  1. A.Springfield, Massachusetts, USA
  2. B.Cairo, Egypt
  3. C.Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA
  4. D.Paris, France
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA

Why

The textbook states that volleyball was first introduced in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, United States of America (USA). Springfield is where the game was first shown at the YMCA in 1896, not where it was first introduced.

Question 4

How many players from one team are on the court during a play?

  1. A.6
  2. B.4
  3. C.12
  4. D.5
Show the answer and why

Answer: A 6

Why

The textbook says there must always be six players per team in a play. A team may have up to 12 players for a match, but only six of them are on the court at one time.

Question 5

A women's volleyball net is set at what height?

  1. A.2.43 m
  2. B.2.24 m
  3. C.2.55 m
  4. D.1.80 m
Show the answer and why

Answer: B 2.24 m

Why

The net top is set at 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women. The posts are 2.55 m high, and the antenna is 1.80 m long, so those numbers are not the net height.

Question 6

A school in Addis Ababa wants to mark out a volleyball court. The playing court must be 18 m long and 9 m wide. The free zone must be at least 3 m wide on all sides. What is the smallest total size of the marked area, including the free zone?

  1. A.24 m by 15 m
  2. B.21 m by 12 m
  3. C.18 m by 9 m
  4. D.24 m by 12 m
Show the answer and why

Answer: A 24 m by 15 m

Why

The free zone is at least 3 m on each side. For the length, add 3 m at each end: 18 + 3 + 3 = 24 m. For the width, add 3 m on each side: 9 + 3 + 3 = 15 m. So the total size is 24 m by 15 m.

Question 7

In a set that is not the deciding 5th set, which score ends the set?

  1. A.25-24
  2. B.24-24
  3. C.26-24
  4. D.25-25
Show the answer and why

Answer: C 26-24

Why

A set is won by the team that first scores 25 points with a minimum lead of two points. At 26-24, the team has 25 or more points and leads by two, so the set ends. At 25-24 the lead is only one point, so play continues.

Question 8

When the match is tied 2-2 in sets, the deciding 5th set is played to how many points?

  1. A.10
  2. B.21
  3. C.25
  4. D.15
Show the answer and why

Answer: D 15

Why

The textbook says that in the case of a 2-2 tie, the deciding 5th set is played to 15 points, with a minimum lead of 2 points. Normal sets are played to 25 points.

Question 9

According to the rules, what is the weight of a volleyball?

  1. A.200 to 220 g
  2. B.260 to 280 g
  3. C.65 to 67 cm
  4. D.0.30 to 0.325 kg/cm2
Show the answer and why

Answer: B 260 to 280 g

Why

The textbook says the circumference of the ball is 65 to 67 cm and its weight is 260 to 280 g. The inside pressure is 0.30 to 0.325 kg/cm2, so the pressure is not the weight.

Question 10

The receiving team wins the right to serve. Which position does the player in position 2 move to?

  1. A.Position 3
  2. B.Position 6
  3. C.Position 1
  4. D.Position 5
Show the answer and why

Answer: C Position 1

Why

When the receiving team has gained the right to serve, its players rotate one position clockwise. The player in position 2 rotates to position 1 to serve. The player in position 1 then rotates to position 6.
