Amhara says 5.5 million students are in school

The Amhara Regional Education Bureau says 5.5 million students are attending classes in the 2019 E.C. academic year, after schools reopened across the region. Tikvah University and Tikvah Education reported the figure on Tikimt 16, 2019 E.C. (26 October 2026). The bureau's head, Tilahun Worknehe, also said work to build eight model schools in the region's eight regional metropolitan cities will continue. The reports give no new dates or enrolment steps for parents and students.

What did the bureau say?

The Amhara Regional Education Bureau said on Tikimt 16, 2019 E.C. (26 October 2026) that 5.5 million students are attending classes in the 2019 E.C. academic year. Tikvah University and Tikvah Education carried the same text on the same day.

The bureau's head, Tilahun Worknehe, gave the figure at a review of the first-quarter performance of the 2019 E.C. plan, held in Bahir Dar. He said that the regional government, the bureau and residents worked together so that schools in every area were opened.

Tilahun also recalled that security problems in the region in past years had badly damaged the education sector. The reports do not say how many students were enrolled before the disruption, or how many schools reopened.

02

Which students and schools does this cover?

The figure covers students across the Amhara region, since the bureau says schools were opened in all areas. The reports do not say which grades or zones the students are in, or how many students each area has.

The plan for eight model schools concerns the region's eight regional metropolitan cities. The reports do not name those cities, say which grades the schools would take, or say when construction would begin.

Which dates matter, and what should families bring?

The reports mention no enrolment fee, no documents to bring and no steps to take, and the bureau has not announced any of them in these reports. No dates for the model school construction have been announced either.

  • The bureau's own notices on enrolment and school openings, which the reports do not mention.
  • The names of the eight regional metropolitan cities and the sites of the model schools, once the bureau announces them.
  • Bureau figures broken down by grade and zone, which would show whether the 5.5 million figure is complete.

What came before this figure?

The bureau said that security problems in past years had seriously damaged education in the region. The 5.5 million figure follows the reopening of schools that had been closed or disrupted. The reports do not say how many schools were affected or for how long they were shut.
