What did the association say about the criteria?
Tikvah University and Tikvah Education both reported on Tikimt 9, 2019 E.C. (19 October 2026) that some criteria for re-registering higher education institutions have been amended. Both posts carry the same text, which cites an interview with Shegar FM.
The Ethiopian Private Higher Education and TVET Institutions Association said the changes were made because many institutions found the earlier criteria hard to meet. Its president, Molla Tsegaye (Dr), said the Education and Training Authority had amended some criteria on that basis, and that several private colleges are now re-registering.
The Authority's office head, Tamiru Mesfin, is reported to have said the rules aim to raise educational quality, not to close institutions. Some requirements may be hard for private colleges but should be met gradually where the sector needs them.
Which colleges and students does this affect?
The change concerns private higher education institutions going through re-registration. Students and parents at those colleges have a direct interest in the result, but the reports do not say what it will mean for enrolled students. They do not mention public universities.
The association also said some colleges have not met the minimum requirement. When asked to assess themselves and send the results to the Authority, some did not do it properly, and some did not correct what they were asked to fix.
What dates and documents have been named?
The only date in the reports is the day they were published. Neither post gives a re-registration deadline, a list of documents or a fee.
| Item | What the reports say |
|---|---|
| Amendment to some criteria | Reported on Tikimt 9, 2019 E.C. (19 October 2026) |
| Which criteria changed | Not named in either post |
| Requirements still disputed | Referred back by letter to the House of Peoples' Representatives and the Education and Training Authority |
| Re-registration deadline | Not announced |
What should colleges and students do first?
Find the Authority's notice
Look for the Education and Training Authority's own notice on the amended criteria and any deadline. The reports give neither.
Check any self-assessment
If your college is asked to assess itself, check the result against the criteria before sending it, since the association says some assessments were sent incorrectly.
Answer every correction
Respond to each point the Authority asks you to fix. The association says some colleges have not acted on such requests.
What led to this change?
The re-registration criteria were set out before this amendment. The association says they were too demanding and many colleges struggled to meet them. Requirements the sector needs may be met gradually, while the disputed ones have been sent back for another look.
The reports do not say when the earlier criteria were issued, which requirements they set, or when the amendment took effect.
