ቁጥሮች እስከ

When you use it

Use this when you must arrange several whole numbers up to 1000 from smallest to largest or from largest to smallest.

Watch out

Compare hundreds first, then tens, then ones. A number with fewer hundreds must come before one with more hundreds, even when its tens digit is larger.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 1-23, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this when you must place the symbol >, < or = between two whole numbers up to 1000.

Watch out

Compare hundreds with hundreds, tens with tens and ones with ones. Check the hundreds first, then the tens, then the ones; a number with more hundreds is always the larger one.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 1-23, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this when a question asks you to count on or back in hundreds from a number up to 1000.

Watch out

When you count in hundreds only the hundreds digit changes and the last two digits stay the same, so from 300 the next number is 400, not 405.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 1-23, then checked twice before it went up

Hundreds (መቶ)Tens (አስር)Ones (አንድ)
592
456
324

When you use it

Use this when you must name the hundreds, tens or ones digit of a number up to 1000, or write a number in place value columns.

Watch out

Count place values from the right: in 592 the 2 is in the ones place and the 5 is in the hundreds place, so do not read the digits in the order they are written.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 1-23, then checked twice before it went up

02

Addition and Subtraction of Three-Digit Numbers

When you use it

Use this method when the sum of digits in any place value column equals 10 or greater.

Watch out

Forgetting to add the carried-over digit into the next place value column on the left.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 24-44, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this method to add two-digit or three-digit numbers vertically when the sum in each place value is 9 or less.

Watch out

Adding digits from different place values, such as adding a ones digit to a tens digit.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 24-44, then checked twice before it went up

03

እስከ 20 ያሉ ቁጥሮችን በ2 ማባዛት

MultiplicationResult
n×0n \times 000
n×1n \times 1nn

When you use it

Use this to quickly find the product when multiplying any number by 0 or 1.

Watch out

Multiplying by 0 always results in 0, while multiplying by 1 leaves the number unchanged.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, page 45 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this when multiplying whole numbers by 10.

Watch out

Do not add 10 to the number, place a 0 at the end of the number.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, page 45 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this when finding the product of any number and 2, which means doubling.

Watch out

Multiplying by 2 means adding the number to itself, not adding 2 to the number.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, page 45 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Follow these steps when solving mathematical word problems.

Watch out

Identify what is given and what is asked before choosing the operation and calculating.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, page 45 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

04

ግማሽ እና ሩብ

FractionEqual parts in one whole
12\frac{1}{2}2
14\frac{1}{4}4

When you use it

Use when naming a part of a whole shared into two or four equal pieces, or when asked how many halves or quarters a whole has.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 63-71, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Reach for this when a whole object, shape or group is shared equally into two or four parts and you need to name each part.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 63-71, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use when shading or naming a half or a quarter in a picture or shape.

Watch out

A shape cut into two pieces of different size is not a half, and four uneven pieces are not quarters. Fold the shape to check that the parts match exactly before you shade or name them.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 63-71, then checked twice before it went up

Number of quartersEqual to
212\frac{1}{2}
411
822

When you use it

Use when converting a number of quarters into halves or wholes, for example when a question asks how many halves two quarters make.

Watch out

Two quarters make one half, not one whole. Four quarters make one whole, and eight quarters make two wholes.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 63-71, then checked twice before it went up

05

ንድፎች

When you use it

Use this when a pattern has blanks or asks what comes next.

Watch out

Find the unit first, then continue it in the same order. In 149 149 149 149 ? the next member is 149, not 49 or 9.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 72-79, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this when you must name a repeating pattern as one-unit, two-unit or three-unit.

Watch out

Count the distinct items in one repeat, not the total number of items. 88888 is a one-unit pattern because only 8 repeats, even though there are five 8s.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 72-79, then checked twice before it went up

06

ርዝመትን በሳንቲሜትር እና በሜትር መለካት

When you use it

Use when combining or finding the difference between two length measurements.

Watch out

Add or subtract only quantities that have the exact same unit of measurement.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 80-101, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use when identifying the rule of a pattern or finding missing terms in a sequence.

Watch out

Find the complete repeating core unit before filling in missing members.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 80-101, then checked twice before it went up

07

QuantityStandard Units
Lengthmm, cmcm
Masskgkg, gg
CapacityLL, mLmL

When you use it

Use when identifying the correct measurement unit for length, mass, or capacity.

Watch out

Only add or subtract measurements that have the exact same unit.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 102-110, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use when sorting collected data or pictures into distinct groups.

Watch out

Choose a single consistent rule, such as size, use, or material, before grouping items.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 102-110, then checked twice before it went up

08

የጠለል ምስሎችን በማየት መመደብ

When you use it

Use tally marks to count data items and record their frequencies in a table.

Watch out

Draw single vertical lines for each item up to four, and use the fifth line to cross the group of four.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 111-122, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this rule to determine the number of sides or corners of any plane figure.

Watch out

The number of sides and the number of corners in a plane figure are always equal.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 111-122, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this concept when comparing two or more geometric shapes by shape and size.

Watch out

Similar figures have the exact same shape, but they can differ in size.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, pages 111-122, then checked twice before it went up

09

Ethiopian Money

When you use it

Use this rule when adding or subtracting amounts given in Birr and Santim.

Watch out

Never add Birr directly to Santim. Always compute Birr with Birr and Santim with Santim separately.

Drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, page 123 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

C=A−PC = A - P
CC
Change returned to the buyerBirr\text{Birr}
AA
Amount of money given to the sellerBirr\text{Birr}
PP
Total price of the items purchasedBirr\text{Birr}

When you use it

Use this formula to find the correct change returned after paying for goods.

Watch out

Do not subtract the money given from the price. Always subtract the price from the money given.

Questions students ask

What do the Grade 2 Mathematics cards cover?
25 cards across 9 chapters of the national textbook: ቁጥሮች እስከ, Addition and Subtraction of Three-Digit Numbers, እስከ 20 ያሉ ቁጥሮችን በ2 ማባዛት, ግማሽ እና ሩብ, ንድፎች, ርዝመትን በሳንቲሜትር እና በሜትር መለካት, ከተሳለ ስዕል በመነሳት መረጃዎችን መመደብ, የጠለል ምስሎችን በማየት መመደብ and 1 more. You can take any chapter one card at a time on the page itself.
Is there a national exam in Grade 2?
No. Ethiopia sets national exams in Grade 6, Grade 8 and Grade 12 only. These cards are for your school's own exams, and for the national exam that comes a few years later.
Where do these cards come from?
They are drafted from Grade 2 Mathematics, the Ministry of Education textbook for this grade. A second pass that cannot see the chapter then re-derives every formula, constant and table row, and anything it cannot confirm is held back instead of published.
Is this free?
Yes. Every card here is free to read and the printable sheet is free to download. Neither needs an account.
When was this last checked?
12 October 2026. Cards arrive chapter by chapter, and the line under each one says when that card was last read through.
