ልብስ

When you use it

Use this when one Amharic letter carries two sounds joined together, such as ሏ, and you must read it or split it into its parts.

Watch out

To split a complex letter, keep the first sound with its own vowel: ሟ is ሙ-ዋ, so the first part is ሙ, not ሞ, and not ዋ alone.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 1-11, then checked twice before it went up

First letterSecond letterThird letter
ሀሐኀ
ሠሰ
አዐ
ጸፀ

When you use it

Use this when two or more letters sound the same but look different, and you must choose the right one when writing a word.

Watch out

The sounds are identical, so the ear cannot decide the spelling: ዐይን is written with ዐ, not አ.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 1-11, then checked twice before it went up

02

ወቅቶች

When you use it

Use Arat Neteb (፡፡) at the end of a finished statement, and a question mark (?) at the end of an interrogative sentence.

Watch out

Do not end a question with Arat Neteb, and never omit Arat Neteb at the end of a regular sentence.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 12-23, then checked twice before it went up

03

ታሪኮች

WordAntonym
በርካታጥቂት
ፍቅርጥላቻ
ሰላምጦርነት
ከተማገጠር
ድሮዘንድሮ

When you use it

Use when answering vocabulary questions that ask for the direct opposite of a given word.

Watch out

Do not provide synonyms when the question asks for antonyms (opposites).

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, page 24 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use when changing plural Amharic nouns into their singular forms by removing the plural suffix.

Watch out

Remember to drop the suffix -ዎች completely without altering the base root word.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, page 24 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

04

የአትክልት ቦታ

When you use it

Reach for this when a task gives plural words such as ቤቶች or መኪናዎች and asks you to write them in singular form, following the model given.

Watch out

Do not simply cut off the last letter. ቤቶች becomes ቤት, not ቤቶ, and እርሳሶች becomes እርሳስ, because the plural ending changes the letter before it.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 34-45, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Reach for this when you must choose the end mark of a sentence, either when writing your own sentences or when reading a passage aloud.

Watch out

A sentence that asks something ends with ? even if it is short, and a sentence that expresses strong feeling ends with !. Ending a question with a full stop, or an exclamation with ?, loses marks.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 34-45, then checked twice before it went up

Split piecesJoined word
የ - ህፃናትየህፃናት
አንድ - ነትአንድነት
ሲ - መለስሲመለስ
የ - አካባቢ - ውየአካባቢው

When you use it

Use this table when a task asks you to split a word into pieces and join the pieces again, or to read a joined word by first separating its parts.

Watch out

Join the pieces exactly as they sit together in the word, without adding or dropping a letter. The joined word must match the split pieces letter for letter.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 34-45, then checked twice before it went up

05

የአካባቢ ንጽህና አጠባበቅ

When you use it

Use at the end of complete sentences to indicate statements, questions, or strong emotions.

Watch out

Do not place a full stop (።) at the end of a question mark (?) or exclamation mark (!).

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 46-58, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use when converting an affirmative past tense Amharic verb into its negative form.

Watch out

Both the prefix አል and the suffix ም must be attached together. Omitting either one makes the verb incomplete.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 46-58, then checked twice before it went up

WordSynonym
ተጣደፈተቻኮለ
ተወአቆመ
አየተመለከተ
የግልየራስ
ዘወትርሁልጊዜ
ያስፈልጋልይጠቅማል
በጋራበህብረት

When you use it

Use when identifying words with similar meanings from the reading and vocabulary exercises.

Watch out

Do not confuse words of similar sound with words of similar meaning.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 46-58, then checked twice before it went up

06

ባህላዊ ሙዚቃ

WordAntonym
ቅርብሩቅ
ከኋላከፊት
መጣሔደ
ያንሳልይበልጣል
ጠላወደደ

When you use it

Use this when finding or matching opposite meanings of common Amharic words.

Watch out

Match verbs with verbs and position markers with position markers rather than mixing word categories.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 59-69, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use when joining segmented word stems, prefixes, and suffixes into a single complete Amharic word.

Watch out

Do not leave spaces or hyphens between word parts when writing the combined word.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 59-69, then checked twice before it went up

07

መልካምሥነምግባር

When you use it

Use a question mark (?) at the end of inquiry sentences and an exclamation mark (!) for expressions of strong feeling or surprise.

Watch out

Do not place an exclamation mark at the end of a question sentence asking for information like time or definition.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 70-79, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this rule when breaking down Amharic words into their prefix and base word.

Watch out

Do not separate root letters that are part of the base word itself. Only detach prefixes like የ, ከ, በ, or ለ.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 70-79, then checked twice before it went up

WordMeaning
ውዝዋዜእስክስታ
ጥሩመልካም
ተመልካችታዳሚ
ትዝታትውስታ
ባህልልማድ

When you use it

Use this table to recall word meanings and contextual synonyms from the chapter.

Watch out

Match words based on their specific context in reading rather than literal translations.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 70-79, then checked twice before it went up

08

የምግብ አዘገጃጀት

When you use it

Use this technique to detach prepositional or conjunction prefixes from the root word.

Watch out

Always write the hyphen between the prefix and the root word, such as in ስለ-በላ.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, page 80 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

Word CategoryDescriptionExamples
ድርጊት የሚያሳዩተግባርን የሚገልጹ ቃላትበላ፣ ጠጣ፣ ጎረሰች፣ ሰራች
የምግብ መጠሪያየምግብ እና የመጠጥ ስሞችተጋቢኖ፣ ወጥ፣ ዳቦ፣ እንጀራ
መጠንን የሚገልጹርዝመትና ውፍረትን የሚያሳዩ ቃላትረጅም፣ አጭር፣ ቀጭን፣ ወፍራም

When you use it

Use this to group vocabulary words into actions, food nouns, and size descriptions.

Watch out

Do not confuse action words like eating with food names like bread.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, page 80 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

09

ዲጂታል ቁስ

When you use it

Use this when a word in a passage or question is written as two parts joined by a hyphen, or when you are asked to split or join compound words such as ስነ-ስርዓት.

Watch out

Write the first part in its linked form (ስነ, ቤተ, ልበ) and keep the hyphen when you show the pair. Do not write the first part in its free form, and do not drop the hyphen.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 89-97, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this for a poem or passage task that asks you to pick out words starting with the same letter and words ending with the same letter.

Watch out

Compare the exact character, including its vowel form. ማላ and ጠላ both end in ላ, but a word ending in ሉ or ሎ does not match them.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, pages 89-97, then checked twice before it went up

10

የዱር እንስሳት

CategoryExamples
የቤት እንስሳትላም፣ በሬ፣ በግ፣ ድመት፣ ዶሮ
የዱር እንስሳትአንበሳ፣ ዝሆን፣ ጦጣ፣ ዝንጀሮ፣ ቀበሮ፣ ድኩላ፣ ሰጎን፣ የሜዳ አህያ

When you use it

Use this classification to distinguish between animals that live around human homes and those that live in the wild.

Watch out

Do not confuse wild animals that look similar to domestic ones, such as zebra (የሜዳ አህያ) with donkey.

Drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, page 98 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this method to build a new word by dropping the first fidel of a given word and replacing it with another.

Watch out

The resulting combination must form a real, meaningful Amharic word.

Questions students ask

What do the Grade 2 Amharic cards cover?
22 cards across 10 chapters of the national textbook: ልብስ, ወቅቶች, ታሪኮች, የአትክልት ቦታ, የአካባቢ ንጽህና አጠባበቅ, ባህላዊ ሙዚቃ, መልካምሥነምግባር, የምግብ አዘገጃጀት and 2 more. You can take any chapter one card at a time on the page itself.
Is there a national exam in Grade 2?
No. Ethiopia sets national exams in Grade 6, Grade 8 and Grade 12 only. These cards are for your school's own exams, and for the national exam that comes a few years later.
Where do these cards come from?
They are drafted from Grade 2 Amharic, the Ministry of Education textbook for this grade. A second pass that cannot see the chapter then re-derives every formula, constant and table row, and anything it cannot confirm is held back instead of published.
Is this free?
Yes. Every card here is free to read and the printable sheet is free to download. Neither needs an account.
When was this last checked?
12 October 2026. Cards arrive chapter by chapter, and the line under each one says when that card was last read through.
