Legs (number)Letters
1ቀ ተ ቸ ነ ኘ የ ገ ፐ ኀ
2ለ ሰ ሸ በ አ ኸ ዘ ዠ ደ ጸ ጀ ጰ ቨ
3ጠ ጨ ሐ
0ሠ መ ወ ዐ ፀ ሀ ፈ

When you use it

Reach for this when a question asks you to sort the fidel letters by their shape, into one-leg, two-leg, three-leg or legless letters.

Watch out

Place each letter by the leg group printed in the chapter, not by its sound. ቀ is a one-leg letter and በ is a two-leg letter, although both carry the same vowel mark ä.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 1-16, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

When the task asks you to repeat a letter and then build words from it, first repeat the letter in its order, then write words with that letter at the start of each word.

Watch out

Do not write a word that only contains the letter somewhere inside it. The task asks for the letter at the start (መነሻ), so check the first character of every word you write.

02

ቤት

FamilySeven forms in order
ጠጠ ጡ ጢ ጣ ጤ ጥ ጦ
መመ ሙ ሚ ማ ሜ ም ሞ
ረረ ሩ ሪ ራ ሬ ር ሮ

When you use it

When a fill-in exercise asks for the missing letters of a family, check the seven forms against this table.

Watch out

Omit nothing. Each family has exactly seven forms, and the same order is used in every row.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 17-29, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

When a two-letter word such as ጠጣ or ጠቡ is given, split it into its two letters, read each letter alone, then join the sounds into the word.

Watch out

ጠ and ጣ look alike at a glance but differ in their vowel ending. Read each letter before joining, so the word is not misread.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 17-29, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

When a missing letter in a family must be filled in, or a word is read syllable by syllable, recall the seven forms of that family in their fixed order.

Watch out

Write each family from its first letter to its last in order: ጠ, ጡ, ጢ, ጣ, ጤ, ጥ, ጦ. Writing the forms out of order, or skipping one, loses marks in the fill-in exercises.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 17-29, then checked twice before it went up

03

ትምህርት ቤት

When you use it

Reach for this when the exercise asks you to write a three-letter word that starts with ገ, ወ or ከ, or to fill in a missing letter of such a word.

Watch out

The missing letter must make a real word that you can read syllable by syllable. Check the finished word against the chapter's word list before you write it down.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 30-40, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Reach for this when a word from the chapter's word lists, such as ገበረ or ከበበ, has to be read aloud or checked.

Watch out

Read each syllable first and then join them into the word. Do not guess the word from its ending: ገበረ and ከበረ end in the same syllable but begin with different letters.

Unit 4

ኘአገኘአገኙአጥኚ
ጨጨርቅጫጩትአውጪ
ቸቸኮለሰለቹአመቺ

When you use it

Use this to read and write words formed with the letters ኘ, ጨ, and ቸ in their first three vowel orders.

Watch out

Pay close attention to vowel attachments at the bottom or side so you do not confuse the first, second, and third orders.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 41-52, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this method when assembling individual letters into a complete word or breaking down a word into its separate letters for spelling.

Watch out

Keep the exact order of letters intact when segmenting or blending, without skipping any letter.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 41-52, then checked twice before it went up

05

Unit 5

Segmented FidelBlended Word
ሸ ፣ መ ፣ ተሸመተ
ፀ ፣ ሎ ፣ ትፀሎት
ቅ ፣ ዠ ፣ ትቅዠት
ሸ ፣ ለ ፣ ለሸለለ
ፀ ፣ ፀ ፣ ትፀፀት
ቃ ፣ ዠ ፣ ችቃዠች

When you use it

Use this when practicing sounding out individual fidel characters or breaking down words into their component sounds.

Watch out

Keep the distinct sound of sixth-order fidel characters like ት and ች intact without turning them into first-order sounds.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 53-62, then checked twice before it went up

06

Unit 6

When you use it

Use this when identifying, separating, or attaching noun plural suffixes and feminine past verb suffixes.

Watch out

Do not attach the plural noun suffix -ዎች to verb roots, or attach the feminine suffix -ች to plural noun forms.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, page 63 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

WordMeaning
ተማረአወቀ
ህፃንልጅ ወይም ታዳጊ
አዘነተከፋ
ላጲስማጥፊያ

When you use it

Use this to match common textbook vocabulary words with their definitions.

Watch out

Do not confuse synonymous meanings with antonyms when answering definition questions.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, page 63 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

07

ተረት

WordMeaning
ብልህብልጥ
ነጠቀቀማ፤ ወሰደ
ክፉመጥፎ
መላዘዴ
ፈፀመጨረሰ
ቀየረለወጠ
ቀጠነከሳ

When you use it

Reach for this when a question asks for the meaning of a word from this chapter, such as ብልህ or ክፉ, or asks you to match words with their meanings.

Watch out

ነጠቀ means ቀማ or ወሰደ (took by force). Do not confuse it with ሰጠ, which is its opposite and not its meaning.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 74-85, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Reach for this when you must build a word from given letters, or break a word into its letters, as in the መነጠል and ማጣመር exercises.

Watch out

ጨ, ጭ and ጪ are different letters that look alike. When you split or join letters, keep each letter's own sound and do not swap one for another, e.g. ጭ ላ ዳ = ጭላዳ.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 74-85, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Reach for this when a verb ends in ች and you must separate the suffix from the verb stem, or write a verb for a female subject such as ተነሳች or ጠጣች.

Watch out

Split off only the final ች and keep the whole verb stem. Write ታጠበ-ች, not ታጠብ-ች, because ታጠበች is built from ታጠበ.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 74-85, then checked twice before it went up

08

ምግብ

When you use it

Use this when a question asks for the first sound and the last sound of a word, following the model ምግብ, first sound ም and last sound ብ.

Watch out

The first and last sounds are whole syllables, so the last sound of ምግብ is ብ, not the consonant ግ alone. Write each sound with its vowel, as the model does.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 86-96, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this when asked to split a word into its letters or to join separated letters back into a word.

Watch out

Each letter here is a syllable (ሆሄ) that already carries its vowel, so ተመቸ splits into the three letters ተ መ ቸ, not into separate consonants and vowels. When joining, keep the letters in their order; the rearranging tasks only move letters that are already there.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 86-96, then checked twice before it went up

Disease protectiveEnergy and heat givingBody building
ሙዝማርወተት
ብርቱካንድንችእንቁላል
ሎሚስኳር ድንችስጋ
ማንጎዳቦባቄላ

When you use it

Reach for this when a question asks you to name the food types in the reading or to sort a food into its group.

Watch out

Honey and bread belong to the energy and heat group, while meat and beans belong to the body building group. Sort each food by the group the passage gives, not by what you think it does.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 86-96, then checked twice before it went up

09

Unit 9

When you use it

Use this when asked to find the starting or ending sound and letter of a given word.

Watch out

Do not swap the first and last letters when writing them into their respective positions.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, pages 97-107, then checked twice before it went up

10

Unit 10

When you use it

Use to distinguish between the second person feminine possessive suffix on nouns and the third person feminine past tense suffix on verbs.

Watch out

The suffix -ሽ attaches to nouns to show female possession, while -ች attaches to verbs to indicate that a female subject performed the action.

Drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, page 108 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

ላምእምቦሳ / ጥጃ

When you use it

Use when identifying or matching domestic animals with the specific names of their young.

Watch out

Sheep, goats, and horses all share the term ግልገል, whereas a young donkey is specifically called ውርንጭላ.

Questions students ask

What do the Grade 1 Amharic cards cover?
21 cards across 10 chapters of the national textbook: ቤተሰብ, ቤት, ትምህርት ቤት, ተረት, ምግብ and 5 more. You can take any chapter one card at a time on the page itself.
Is there a national exam in Grade 1?
No. Ethiopia sets national exams in Grade 6, Grade 8 and Grade 12 only. These cards are for your school's own exams, and for the national exam that comes a few years later.
Where do these cards come from?
They are drafted from Grade 1 Amharic, the Ministry of Education textbook for this grade. A second pass that cannot see the chapter then re-derives every formula, constant and table row, and anything it cannot confirm is held back instead of published.
Is this free?
Yes. Every card here is free to read and the printable sheet is free to download. Neither needs an account.
When was this last checked?
12 October 2026. Cards arrive chapter by chapter, and the line under each one says when that card was last read through.

Temari turns these cards into practice questions and marks them as you go, with an AI tutor to explain anything that did not land.
