When you use it

Check for these three errors when you edit your writing or punctuate sentences. A fragment is incomplete, a run-on joins two independent clauses with nothing, and a comma splice joins them with only a comma.

Watch out

A comma alone cannot join two independent clauses: The doctor performed the operation, the patient died is wrong. Join them with a semicolon, or with a coordinating connector such as and, but, or, nor, for or yet. A group of words starting with Since or Although and having no main clause is still a fragment.

When you use it

Use it to describe a process or procedure, or when the person or thing affected by the action matters more than the doer. Form it with am, is or are plus the past participle: The rooms are cleaned every day. Is coffee served here?

Watch out

Make am, is or are agree with the subject, and always follow it with the past participle, not the base verb. Only transitive verbs can be made passive. Negative: Coffee is not served here. Question: Is coffee served here?

Practice questions on unit 1

10 multiple-choice questions written against this chapter, each with its answer and the reason. Try one before you open the answer.

Question 1

According to the reading text, how many deaths per year does anthropogenic air pollution account for?

  1. A.about 3 billion
  2. B.about 900,000
  3. C.about 9 million
  4. D.about 90 million
Show the answer and why

Answer: C about 9 million

Why

In paragraph 1 of the reading text, the writer says that anthropogenic air pollution accounts for about 9 million deaths per year. The 3 billion figure in the text is about people who use wood fuel or solid fuel for cooking and heating, not about deaths.

Question 2

Choose the correct simple present form.

My sister ___ to school every day.

  1. A.go
  2. B.goes
  3. C.going
  4. D.gone
Show the answer and why

Answer: B goes

Why

In the simple present, we add -s to the verb when the subject is third person singular (he, she or it). "My sister" is she, so the verb is goes.

Question 3

What is a phrasal verb?

  1. A.a verb combined with a particle, such as an adverb or a preposition, to form one meaningful unit
  2. B.two nouns joined together in one sentence
  3. C.a verb and a helping verb used together only in questions
  4. D.an adjective that describes a noun
Show the answer and why

Answer: A a verb combined with a particle, such as an adverb or a preposition, to form one meaningful unit

Why

The unit says a phrasal verb is a verb and a particle (an adverb or a preposition) that together make one meaningful unit. Examples are turn down, run into and set up.

Question 4

Read the sentence: The concert tickets were expensive we went to the movies instead.

Which punctuation mark is needed to connect the two independent clauses correctly?

  1. A.a hyphen in the word "movies"
  2. B.an apostrophe after "tickets"
  3. C.a semicolon after "expensive"
  4. D.a colon after "instead"
Show the answer and why

Answer: C a semicolon after "expensive"

Why

A semicolon is used to connect two independent clauses. Both The concert tickets were expensive and we went to the movies instead can stand alone as sentences, so a semicolon after "expensive" joins them correctly.

Question 5

Choose the best word to complete the sentence.

___ it rained, they enjoyed their walk.

  1. A.Although
  2. B.Because
  3. C.Unless
  4. D.So
Show the answer and why

Answer: A Although

Why

Although starts an adverb clause of concession. It shows a contrast: they enjoyed the walk even though the rain came. The other words do not show a contrast, so they do not fit the meaning.

Question 6

Choose the correct simple future form.

I am sure the winner ___ awarded.

  1. A.was
  2. B.is being
  3. C.has been
  4. D.will be
Show the answer and why

Answer: D will be

Why

When the speaker says "I am sure", they are expressing a personal belief about the future. The unit gives the pattern The winner will be awarded for this use, so will be is correct.

Question 7

Which word has the long vowel sound /i:/, as in the word "need"?

  1. A.sit
  2. B.seek
  3. C.sick
  4. D.rich
Show the answer and why

Answer: B seek

Why

The word seek has the long vowel /i:/ like need, keep and feel. The words sit, sick and rich have the short vowel /ɪ/, which is the other sound in the pairs from the unit.

Question 8

In the sentence I am planning a trip to Asmara later this year, the word "Asmara" is a ___ noun.

  1. A.common
  2. B.abstract
  3. C.proper
  4. D.collective
Show the answer and why

Answer: C proper

Why

A proper noun names a specific place, person or thing. "Asmara" is the name of one specific city, so it is a proper noun. Common nouns refer to things in general, such as city.

Question 9

Read this sentence: The exam was difficult. I think I did well, ___.

Which word can correctly end the sentence?

  1. A.although
  2. B.though
  3. C.because
  4. D.unless
Show the answer and why

Answer: B though

Why

The unit says that although cannot be used at the end of a sentence. Though can be used at the end, as in I think I did well, though. Because and unless do not show the contrast needed here.

Question 10

Which sentence is a comma splice?

  1. A.The doctor performed the operation, the patient died.
  2. B.The doctor performed the operation, and the patient died.
  3. C.Since the drugs have many side effects.
  4. D.The doctor performed the operation; the patient died.
Show the answer and why

Answer: A The doctor performed the operation, the patient died.

Why

A comma splice joins two independent clauses with only a comma. In option A, a comma alone joins two complete ideas, which is not correct. Option B uses a comma with and, option D uses a semicolon, and option C is a fragment, so none of those is a comma splice.
