How the two calendars line up
The Ethiopian calendar has twelve months of thirty days and a thirteenth, Pagume, of five days, or six in a leap year. New Year falls on 11 September, or 12 September when the Gregorian year that follows is a leap year.
The year number runs seven years behind from New Year to the end of December, and eight years behind from January to New Year's Eve. That is why one Ethiopian year always straddles two Gregorian ones.
The converter handles the years 1900 to 2099, which covers every birth certificate, school record and contract most people will need.
