What is on this calendar
The school year opens on Meskerem 1, which falls on 11 September 2026 this year, and the Ministry has set Tuesday 15 September, Meskerem 5, as the first day of class.
The holidays are the national ones: the fixed Ethiopian dates, Fasika and Good Friday from the Orthodox calendar, and the three Islamic feasts. Those three follow the sighting of the moon, so their dates are estimates that can move by a day.
National exam dates are added when the Ministry announces them. Until then the page shows last year's windows as a guide to the season, clearly marked as last year's.
- When does school start in 2019 E.C.?
- Classes start on Meskerem 5, 2019 E.C., which is Tuesday 15 September 2026, as the Ministry announced when the 2018 E.C. results came out.
- When is the Grade 12 national exam in 2019 E.C.?
- It has not been announced. Last year the natural science papers ran from 30 June to 10 July 2026 and the social science papers from 13 to 23 July. The page updates as soon as the new window is published.
- Why are some holidays marked as estimates?
- Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and Mawlid are set by the sighting of the moon. The dates here come from the tabular calendar and can differ from the announced day by one day.
