What is the Adwa Victory Memorial planning for schools?
Fana Broadcasting Corporate and ENA English both reported on 30 October 2026 (Tikimt 20, 2019 E.C.) that the Adwa Victory Memorial is preparing a school outreach programme. Its aim is to help young Ethiopians understand the Victory of Adwa, the country's cultural heritage and the shared history that has shaped national unity.
Mekuanent Tilahun, the memorial's study and research director, said preparations for the programme have been finalized and that the preliminary activities needed before launch are complete. ENA reported that the programme is designed for the new generation and will extend the memorial's educational work beyond its own site.
Which pupils and schools will it reach?
The programme is designed for schools from pre-primary to secondary level, so pupils in those grades would learn about Adwa, Ethiopian culture, identity and unity. The reports do not name the regions, the number of schools or how pupils will be chosen.
Higher education is also part of the plan. ENA reported that similar discussion-based activities are under way in universities and colleges, but gave no details, and the reports give no timing for them.
When does it start, and what do you need?
| Item | Timing as reported |
|---|---|
| School outreach launch | Due soon, no date given |
| Memorandum of understanding with the Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau | Work has begun toward signing, no signing date given |
| Adwa Forum | February, no day given |
The reports were published on Tikimt 20, 2019 E.C. (30 October 2026). Nothing has been said about fees, a registration process or documents to bring, and the memorial has not announced them.
What should schools and families do now?
Wait for the start date
The memorial has not announced when the launch will happen. Check its own announcements before planning any school visit.
Ask your school about the agreement
The memorial is working toward an agreement with the Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau. Ask your school whether it has heard about the programme.
Note the February forum
The Adwa Forum is set for February, but only a limited number of people can attend in person, so watch for an announcement on how places are booked.
What led to the programme?
The memorial holds monthly public discussion forums, which the reports describe as a platform for historical education and for building a shared understanding of the country's past. The school programme extends that work from the memorial to pupils, and the memorial wants to become a dynamic meeting place for Ethiopians and Africans.
Both reports describe the Victory of Adwa as the moment when Ethiopians united to repel an invading colonial army and defend their independence and dignity. Fana added that the victory inspired Black people facing oppression elsewhere. The reports do not say when work on the outreach began.
