When you use it

Use this when asked how physical education connects with another profession, such as medicine. First name the profession, then state the physical ability that its work requires, then explain how physical education improves that ability.

Watch out

Do not stop at saying physical education is helpful. Name the specific ability: for example, a surgeon needs hand-eye coordination and muscle strength to keep working long hours without tiredness.

Drafted from Grade 8 Health and Physical Education, pages 1-7, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this when a task asks about the wins, participation or social and investment work of a famous Ethiopian athlete. First ask people and organisations about their achievements, then check the details on websites, and finally present the findings to the class.

Watch out

Name the event, year and result together, such as Abebe Bikila's gold medal in the 1960 Rome marathon, rather than giving general praise for the athlete.

02

RingPoints
Innermost (smallest) ring5
Second ring3
Outer (largest) ring2

When you use it

Use this when you score a round of the circle target game, to work out how many points a flat stone earns from the ring it lands in.

Watch out

A stone that touches the line is counted as burnt and earns no points for the thrower or the team, so check the stone before you throw.

03

StepWhat to do
1Lie on your back with the knees bent and the soles of both feet flat on the floor.
2Place both hands behind the head and lift the upper body off the floor towards the knees.
3Return slowly to the starting position.
4Keep both feet on the floor the whole time. They must never lift off the ground.

When you use it

Use this procedure when you practise the curl up to develop the upper abdominal muscles, the stomach and back muscles of Grade 8 Health and Physical Education.

Watch out

Students often lift the legs to help the body up. The feet must stay flat on the floor for the whole movement, or the exercise is done wrongly.

04

StageWhat to do
1Grip and basic stance: hold the discus on the throwing hand, with its edge across the extended index finger, the middle finger and the last joints of the next finger. The thumb and little finger rest on the flat side.
2Arm swing before the throw: swing the arm to gather power. Practise first without the discus, pretending to hold it.
3Turn: practise the arm movement and the turn again and again while holding the discus, or empty-handed.
4Power position: take up the position in which power is gathered for the throw.
5Final throw: throw while keeping your balance, and finish inside the circle without stepping out of it.
6Final position: after the throw, hold the finishing stance and keep your balance.

When you use it

Reach for this when you must describe or practise the sequence of the discus throw, from grip to final position.

Watch out

Finish the throw inside the circle without stepping out of it. Stepping out is the mistake this chapter warns against most clearly in the discus.

Drafted from Grade 8 Health and Physical Education, pages 38-49, then checked twice before it went up

StepWhat to do
1Before the glide, hold the shot near the shoulder, under the ear, resting on the palm in the shot grip.
2Turn your back to the throwing direction. Open the feet to shoulder width and stretch the non-throwing arm straight up.
3Lean the upper body forward. Glide back one step with the left foot, bring the right foot after it, then take another step with the left foot.
4Rise up and drive the throwing arm up and forward. Rising of the body and stretching of the arm happen together.
5As the arm stretches and throws, the rear heel lifts and the body balances on the toes. Throw the shot with the whole body.

When you use it

Reach for this when you must explain or practise the backward glide method of the shot put, from the starting hold to the final push.

Watch out

The throw comes from the whole body, not the arm alone. The rear heel must lift as the arm extends, with balance carried on the toes.

05

StepAction
1Lift the heels slightly, put the feet together, crouch, and stretch both arms forward with palms facing down.
2Push the mat with the front of the feet to move forward, and extend the knees.
3When the legs are fully straight, land the arms on the mat at shoulder width, tuck the head to the chest, and roll forward with the legs straight, building speed.
4After the roll, bend the knees and hips to rise, with the arms stretched forward at chest level.
5After a set run-up, practise the whole sequence as described above.

When you use it

Reach for this when practising the dive roll (long forward roll) in Grade 8 gymnastics, to check the order of the movement before you try it on the mat.

Watch out

Learn the short forward roll first and practise the dive roll on a rolled mat. Keep the legs straight at the knees all the way through the roll, and tuck the head to the chest.

Drafted from Grade 8 Health and Physical Education, pages 50-62, then checked twice before it went up

StepAction
1Run a short distance or rise from standing, and step one leg forward to start.
2Place the hands at shoulder width on the mat, with the palms fully flat and the fingers pointing forward.
3Keep the neck firm and the eyes on the fingers.
4Straighten both arms to carry the body weight and keep balance.
5Tighten the legs, straighten from the hips, and extend the body upward.

When you use it

Reach for this when learning the handstand (በእጅ መቆም) in free gymnastics, to set up hands, head and body in the right order.

Watch out

Place the palms fully flat on the mat with the fingers pointing forward. Keep the arms straight and the neck firm, otherwise the balance is lost.

06

StepAction
1Run in, then stop
2Jump and lift the ball above the head
3Shooting hand behind the ball, forearm underneath it
4Non-shooting hand beside the ball
5At the top of the jump, move the non-shooting hand away and throw with the shooting hand
6Extend the elbow and wrist through the throw
7Eyes on the front part of the rim

When you use it

Reach for this when you must perform or explain a jump shot into the basketball basket, from a run-up or from a standing start.

Watch out

The elbow and wrist must be fully extended on the throw, and the eyes must stay on the front part of the rim.

Drafted from Grade 8 Health and Physical Education, pages 63-81, then checked twice before it went up

StepAction
1Watch the ball during the run-up
2Swing the kicking leg back
3Strike with the kicking part of the foot on the centre of the ball
4Let the kicking leg follow the ball

When you use it

Reach for this when you must strike a football towards goal, from the run-up to the final kick, or when you must explain how it is done.

Watch out

Let the kicking leg follow the ball through. This is the stated way to reduce the chance of the shot going wide of the goal.

07

When you use it

Reach for this when a student must prepare the Buub board and pebbles for play, or state the board's size and number of stations.

Watch out

The board is 40 cm by 40 cm, divided into 16 squares (4 across and 4 down), and has 24 pebble stations plus one starting station, 25 in all. Students often forget the diamond-shaped starting station at the centre, which is where play begins, not a corner.

Drafted from Grade 8 Health and Physical Education, page 82 onwards, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Reach for this when a student must state the safe holds, the allowed throws, the mat and fighting area, or the number of judges in the traditional wrestling contest (gigigb).

Watch out

Fighting takes place on the inner 5 m by 5 m area of the 6 m by 6 m mat, and the safe holds are only at the waist. Students often quote 6 m as the fighting area, or remember the throws but forget that every hold must be at the waist.

Questions students ask

What do the Grade 8 Health and Physical Education cards cover?
You can take any chapter one card at a time on the page itself.
Do these help with the Grade 8 national exam?
Yes. Grade 8 sits a national exam, and these are the Health and Physical Education rules and formulas it expects you to know. Past papers with a worked answer behind every question are on the same site, also free.
Where do these cards come from?
They are drafted from Grade 8 Health and Physical Education, the Ministry of Education textbook for this grade. A second pass that cannot see the chapter then re-derives every formula, constant and table row, and anything it cannot confirm is held back instead of published.
Is this free?
Yes. Every card here is free to read and the printable sheet is free to download. Neither needs an account.
When was this last checked?
12 October 2026. Cards arrive chapter by chapter, and the line under each one says when that card was last read through.
