Sport and society

When you use it

Use when identifying prohibited actions and code violations under WADA and ETH-NADO regulations.

Watch out

Doping violations apply to support personnel and coaches as well as athletes, and include refusal, tampering, trafficking, or whereabouts failures, not just positive substance tests.

Drafted from Grade 10 Health and Physical Education, pages 1-12, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use when explaining the political reasons why Ethiopia withdrew from the 1976, 1984, and 1988 Olympic Games.

Watch out

Do not confuse the three boycott causes. 1976 was against New Zealand sporting ties with apartheid South Africa, 1984 was the Soviet-led boycott of Los Angeles, and 1988 was demanding joint hosting with North Korea.

02

Health and physical fitness

When you use it

Use this procedure and safety rules when performing upper body strength training with a barbell or dumbbells.

Watch out

Never lift heavy weights without the assistance of a spotter, and end the movement immediately if you feel shoulder pain.

Drafted from Grade 10 Health and Physical Education, pages 13-58, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Use this technique during warm-up or cool-down routines to improve joint and muscle flexibility safely.

Watch out

Do not bounce while stretching, as bouncing can cause muscle strain and injury instead of relaxing the tissue.

03

Athletics

When you use it

Reach for this when asked to name or perform the long jump in order: 1 approach run, 2 take-off, 3 flight, 4 landing.

Watch out

Land in the sand with both feet together, and never fall back onto the backside in the pit, because the textbook warns this can cause serious injury.

04

Football

KeyWhat it means
WidthSend the ball towards the sidelines, away from the centre of the field.
DistanceSend the ball as far from the goal as possible.
HeightSend the ball over the attacking players.

When you use it

Use punching to clear a crossed ball in a crowded goal area when you are not sure you can catch it cleanly. Punching is the clearing action for balls that cannot be caught.

Watch out

Catch the ball whenever you can, and punch only when you doubt a clean catch. Students practise the two-hand punch, even though one hand is also used in some directions.

05

Volleyball

StepWhat the blocker does
1Stay close to the net and keep hands at shoulder level with palms facing the net.
2Follow the hitter's movement and keep your eyes on them.
3Wait for the opponent to jump first.
4Jump immediately after the attacker jumps.
5While the ball is in the air, reach and stretch your hands over the net.
6Angle your hands and look for the ball.

When you use it

Reach for this when asked how a blocker should position and move for a single block, step by step.

Watch out

Do not jump before the attacker. Wait for the opponent to jump first, then jump immediately after. Keep the wrists rigid, the five fingers spread wide, and the arms straight.

Drafted from Grade 10 Health and Physical Education, pages 62-70, then checked twice before it went up

When you use it

Reach for this when a question asks how many time-outs or substitutions a team may use, or which interruptions count as regular game interruptions.

Watch out

A team may request only two time-outs per set, each lasting 30 seconds, and only when the ball is out of play. A team may substitute six players per set. A starting player may be replaced only once per set and must re-enter in his or her original position. A libero is not counted as a substitution.

08

Self-Defence and Sport Ethics

When you use it

Remember this before you practise any grappling, takedown, throw or choke technique, since these are used at close range to control an attacker.

Watch out

The Rear Naked Choke is very dangerous if done improperly, so never practise it or any submission technique without a teacher present.

Questions students ask

What do the Grade 10 Health and Physical Education cards cover?
9 cards across 6 chapters of the national textbook: Sport and society, Health and physical fitness, Athletics, Football, Volleyball and Self-Defence and Sport Ethics. You can take any chapter one card at a time on the page itself.
Is there a national exam in Grade 10?
No. Ethiopia sets national exams in Grade 6, Grade 8 and Grade 12 only. These cards are for your school's own exams, and for the national exam that comes a few years later.
Where do these cards come from?
They are drafted from Grade 10 Health and Physical Education, the Ministry of Education textbook for this grade. A second pass that cannot see the chapter then re-derives every formula, constant and table row, and anything it cannot confirm is held back instead of published.
Is this free?
Yes. Every card here is free to read and the printable sheet is free to download. Neither needs an account.
When was this last checked?
12 October 2026. Cards arrive chapter by chapter, and the line under each one says when that card was last read through.

Temari turns these cards into practice questions and marks them as you go, with an AI tutor to explain anything that did not land.
